West-Line Studio
‘Up to the Mountains and Down to the Villages’ has been West-Line Studio's working designation since its foundation. It describes both the studio's sustained, hands-on practice and its distinctive, living system for locally grounded work. Its effective exploration of generally applicable construction for vernacular systems and mechanisms of spatial control, together with its particular working model that is both ‘reasonable and responsive to human feeling’, offers a possible directional model for contemporary practice in western China.

UED: What circumstances led to your involvement in the Bailong Miao Village Folk Culture Complex in Shiban Town, Huaxi, Guiyang, the Chetian Village Tourist Reception Center and the Chetian Cultural Center?

Haobo Wei: The Bailong Miao Village Folk Culture Complex in Shiban Town, Huaxi, Guiyang, for which research began in 2005 and construction was completed at the end of 2007, is only 375 m², yet it involved a relatively long and difficult working process. The project arose from the new countryside construction programme. At the time, this kind of large-scale, government-led rural construction was unfamiliar, and design fees were very low: it was essentially poverty-relief work. Faced with whether to do it, whether not to do it, and how to do it, most design organisations hesitated. I was uncertain myself. After all, there was not yet an appropriately grounded precedent within contemporary modes of construction. To undertake it meant starting with the most basic work, a laborious, time-consuming and thankless task. The inertia of simplistic formalism and uncritical borrowing was so powerful across rural areas that changing habitual thinking was extremely difficult. As it happened, Lao Tu, the official then leading the new countryside programme, was a highly responsible person who wanted to get things done. He believed that rural construction and living conditions must be the principal issues facing construction in Guizhou at that time. Without further ado, he took us from village to village. We were drawn into it almost despite ourselves. Every difficulty we had anticipated duly arrived, but this also marked the beginning of West-Line Studio's sustained observation, analysis, research and practice in the countryside. There were three main reasons why we were able to become involved in and lead the design of the Chetian Village series undertaken over the last two years. First, the previous design organisation lacked experience in rural work, misunderstood local characteristics, and produced designs that were difficult to implement, with low working efficiency. Second, West-Line Studio had established a record of achievement and effective methods through its rural work in recent years. Third, the working group responsible for Chetian's construction understood the field, recognised the realities and worked in a practical, grounded way.

UED: Are there connections among these three projects in terms of design ideas and practice? Is there a common isomorphic model in your three designs?

Haobo Wei: Continuity is one of West-Line Studio's principal working characteristics. These three projects belong to a continuous line of inquiry that gradually deepens. 1. The entire village of Bailong is built of stone and has a complete order of spatial control. The homes of parents and of their sons and daughters-in-law, alternating through successive generations, enclose a courtyard to form a basic family unit. Several family units surround a slightly larger open yard to form a group of directly related families. Several such groups, responding to the terrain, surround an approximately elliptical yard to form a cluster of extended kin. These clusters ultimately encircle the hilltop, fulfilling rituals of ancestral and mountain worship and establishing a complete spatial system of clan organisation. Bailong thus repeatedly employs the enclosing configuration of its basic units, expanding through self-similarity into a progressively ranked relationship of spatial control. This is a model of hierarchical isomorphism whose basic structural framework is the enclosed courtyard. We applied the village's particular isomorphic model to spatial control in the Bailong Folk Culture Complex. Everyday functional units—including the village committee, reading room and clinic—form a first-level group around a square courtyard. This group and the curved commemorative exhibition hall together surround an elliptical courtyard to form a second-level cluster. Through these two levels of isomorphism, the complex participates in the village's higher-level isomorphic organisation… This constructional thinking comes from the village itself. The building has already moved beyond the confines of simply inheriting tradition through symbols or graphic forms. 2. At the Chetian Visitor Centre, we attempted to introduce Chetian's particular spatial-control model of ‘isomorphic strip units + parallel rows’. This is a geographically based way of grouping space, different from Bailong's ranked grouping order dominated by kinship. Its characteristics are: (1) each elongated strip completes its spatial composition through an approximately L-shaped process of development; (2) the strips form groups and clusters through parallel rows. In fact, both the Bailong complex and Chetian Visitor Centre investigate mechanisms of repeated isomorphic control, but one is concentrated and the other homogeneous. The basic operating principle is to repeat a particular technique of spatial combination, assembling individual units into groups, expanding groups into clusters, and repeating this process until an ordered system of collective space develops. 3. In the more recently completed Chetian Cultural Center, isomorphic control has become West-Line Studio's basic technique for integrating environment and site. Our focus has gradually shifted towards studying the processes through which places are produced locally…

UED: We notice that you have undertaken more than one project in Chetian. What features of this village attracted you? How did you approach and think about designing first a reception centre and then a cultural centre in the same village?

Haobo Wei: Chetian today has six conspicuous characteristics. 1. Its spatial pattern consists of parallel groups of houses stepping down hillsides facing different directions, forming blocks and planes that combine without an overall directional order. The reason is that Chetian occupies several hills. To preserve more level land for cultivation, houses were built in parallel terraces following the slopes. Several hillsides thus produced several parallel districts. This was a rational construction choice responsive to the terrain and economical in land and materials. 2. A two-hundred-year tradition of stone masonry is interwoven with contemporary decorative white walls evoking through-tied timber frames. Stone houses, once the principal form of construction, have severely declined into scattered fragments and now account for only one fifth of the village's buildings. Local thin-layered stone costs much more than commercially available coatings, takes a long time to build with and requires complex craftsmanship. Although Chetian has several quarries and stone-processing plants, their products are mainly sold elsewhere because of the high prices. This is the outcome of a rationalised production of space that saves time, effort and money. 3. Places for public life are seriously lacking. The entire village, with 217 households and 809 people, has only one basketball court and a temporary gathering ground of about two or three hundred square metres, overgrown with weeds. The reasons are: (1) the public amenities explicitly required by contemporary concepts and standards of community planning have largely not been implemented across rural areas; (2) under the market economy, contemporary villages have broken with habits of living within village-bounded ‘social circles’ and among ‘fellow villagers’. Family units are increasingly attached to market society and detached from interpersonal relationships in the village, leading to disregard for and abandonment of communal social life. This is a condition of public space that is neither rational nor responsive to human feeling. 4. Several places associated with historical legends have been occupied by houses or abandoned. Like an ‘invisible hand’, market mechanisms have fundamentally altered the structure of rural society, transforming it into a particular dual structure combining universalised and kinship-based systems. The established system of moral instruction through kinship has ceased to function. This loss of spaces of belief is rational but unresponsive to human feeling. 5. Two thirds of those remaining in the village are elderly people and children. The elderly spend their days accompanied by audio players broadcasting old Miao operas; children either sit in front of television all day or run across the hills. Rural society has divided into a mobile population working elsewhere and a population left behind. For those who leave, the village remains their hometown but is no longer their principal place of work and life; they must move back and forth between urban and rural spaces. Those who remain are either old or young and depend on others for the capacity to improve their lives and environment. This is the established form of a basic family life that is rational yet unresponsive to human feeling. 6. At festivals and weddings, people invariably wear elaborate ethnic dress, and banquets fill streets, lanes and courtyards. Traditional ritual and customary rules are reliably transmitted in the temporarily extraordinary time and space of festivals. Yet the loss of the corresponding ritual spaces leads to unrestricted occupation of circulation routes. This regeneration of customary space responds to human feeling but is not rational. These factors are widespread in Guizhou. Research and practice addressing Chetian's typical conditions may well identify a working method with exemplary significance. Chetian's geographical position is particularly sensitive: it adjoins Gui'an Avenue, the principal arterial road at the very heart of the newly established Gui'an New Area. Urban development has transformed an agricultural village deep in the mountains into a village combining ecological agriculture and tourism within an urban core. This gave rise to the proposals for a visitor centre and a cultural centre. The visitor centre occupies an open, hilly site on the village's edge, immediately beside Gui'an Avenue, where urban and rural relationships meet. The design attempts to retain this junction between urban and village fragments. A sequence of white cubes, linear stone lanes and stone houses expresses a spatial transition penetrating from outside to inside. The cultural centre, within the village's central district, attempts to reconstruct a model of village public life combining moral instruction through belief, secular public life and the transmission of skills. This model is translated into a composition of the stone building at the southwest corner, craft workshops, Jiulong Slope, a waterwheel and channel, an open-air stage and an open yard.

Intersecting Parallel Systems

Chetian Cultural Center occupies an abandoned, open site of approximately five mu, south of the winding Sancha River in the middle of Chetian Village, Gui'an New Area, Guizhou. It is a rare expanse of open, rocky ground in this mountain village. ‘Openness’, the site's distinctive attribute, is a fundamental quality that the design must preserve. The site also lies at the angled junction of three layered parallel orders on the hillsides: one steps down from south to north, another descends progressively from northwest to southeast, and a third slides in parallel from southwest to northeast. Accordingly, the cultural centre is divided into two principal components—an open system of exterior spaces and an inward-looking building volume tucked into one corner—to carry through the site's parallel order and openness.

A Process for Making Place

Three systems each perform their own role: 40 cm-thick stone walls; coloured transparent laminated glass set into roofs and standing within walls; and black metal display panels and suspended ceilings. The enclosed stone spaces, particular lighting conditions and the striking sound of metal against stone together create a vivid sense of place. These are fragments of the indigenous, the crafted, the industrial and of light; through tectonic means they convey the intention of the place. The stone building's plan has two parts: parallel functional volumes and courtyards in the centre, and a ring of semi-open public corridors around the outside. The spatial prototype for this is the combination of Chetian's stepped lanes and the spaces outside people's doors where neighbours gather to chat. Together with the three material systems, this spatial configuration effectively produces a diverse group of indoor places for public life.

A Social Model for Reconstructing Public Life in a Settlement

Chetian Cultural Center reconstructs a social and material structure combining moral instruction through belief, secular public life and the transmission of skills. This structure is translated into a composition of the stone building at the southwest corner, Jiulong Slope, a waterwheel and channel, an open-air stage and an open yard. Built entirely of stone, the building with its raised, folded roof profile recreates the village's monumentality through its substantial stone silhouette. It also provides a place for villagers to communicate publicly, learn about culture and acquire basic working skills. Its layered, stone-lane-like circulation loop and ceremonial exhibition hall convey history in an affecting way. The riverside waterwheel and the winding channel raised into the air subtly recall Chetian's former means of production. The open-air stone stage seems to seek, through classic local Miao operas, a point of return to the pleasure of entertaining oneself. The open square and groups of stone stools placed upon it create settings for diverse public activities. Together these nurture a harmonious social condition informed by humanistic cultivation, understanding of history and the world, and moral education. This is an effort to recreate the dream of a rural society in harmony with human nature.

Isomorphic Units + Parallel Rows + Interlocking Nodes

Chetian Village Tourist Reception Center stands in Chetian Village in the national-level Gui'an New Area in central Guizhou. Chetian is a Miao mountain settlement built of stone, arranged in parallel terraces along open ground and a river. Its spatial structure is a typical model of parallel unit addition without a hierarchy of principal and subordinate elements. Although the village's overall formation follows a common parallel organisation, it has particular features: basic rectangular units spontaneously join in series to grow into strip-like groups; these strips can reconstitute space through turns and enclosures; and several adjacent strips interlock at their ends. Together these form a distinctive site order of isomorphic units, parallel rows and interlocking nodes.

Enclosing Walls + Rows of Walls

Chetian lies in the karst landscape of central Guizhou's mild climatic zone. Its old houses are mainly stone masonry: repeated construction with heavy elements. Their formal composition consists of rows of thick enclosing walls and pitched stone-slab roofs on timber frames. Seen from outside, the layered stone walls are the most distinctive feature, while roofs seem concealed between them. Seen from inside, the buildings are characterised by load-bearing stone and an enclosed, inward orientation. Small windows frame localised views, while rooflights admit light into the deeper parts of the houses.

Site Order + Formal Prototype + Generally Applicable Construction

The design of Chetian Village Tourist Reception Center therefore attempts to introduce the site order of isomorphic units, parallel rows and interlocking nodes as its mechanism of spatial generation. The building is divided into three parallel strips with different spatial types and construction methods, progressing from the square facing the road junction towards the hill behind. This both continues Chetian's typical parallel means of control and makes effective use of parallel strips' flexibility in addressing an irregular site. All three strips employ L-shaped turns as their isomorphic spatial method. Strip one faces the triangular square in front of the road junction. Its spatial type is the ‘courtyard’: repeated L-shaped turns complete an enclosure. Built in ordinary brick masonry and rendered entirely white, it forms a ceremonial entrance space with the atmosphere of an original stone lane. Strip two occupies the widest part of the site. Its spatial type is the ‘lane’. After an L-shaped stretching and twisting that makes full use of the terrain, it turns at its northern end to enclose a small functional group containing men's and women's toilets. Built throughout with Chetian's traditional stone masonry and dry-pointing technique, it evokes the original setting of a winding stone lane leading into seclusion. Strip three has the largest volume. Its spatial type is the ‘hall’. Its basic construction combines a conventional frame, infill walls and local stone facing. It contains the visitor centre's principal functions and a texture that invites recollection. Inside, functions are likewise arranged as units forming strips and strips running in parallel. At its southern end, close to strips one and two, a deliberate, abrupt L-shaped turn interlocks all three into a whole. This modifies the indistinct boundaries of the parallel-control model by giving it closure through a particular site structure. Formally, the three strips emphasise the ‘enclosing walls + rows of walls’ prototype of Chetian's old houses, while consciously transforming an equal relationship between walls into an ordered hierarchy. This organisation—each strip first developing its own L-shaped isomorphism and then being added in parallel—retains relative independence between rows while achieving the homogeneity and integrity of parallel combination. It expresses a vernacular way of controlling space in which repetition and difference coexist. In summary, Chetian Village Tourist Reception Center is the outcome of a working method combining site order, formal prototype and basic construction. 1. Studying site order attempts to translate the accumulated experience of controlling complex terrain over the long history of rural society into a basic framework for spatial generation, a framework imbued with traditional habits of life. 2. Manipulating formal prototypes and controlling their transformation seeks to preserve visual identity and basic stability, achieving a sense of familiar origins. 3. Technology is the material expression of the lived world. Whatever its form—already present, emerging or yet to emerge—it rests on the lived world of its particular time and place as its foundation and source.

A Mechanism of Hierarchical Isomorphism

Research for the Bailong Folk Culture Complex began in 2003, and construction was completed in April 2007. It stands in Bailong Village, Shiban Town, Huaxi District, Guiyang, Guizhou, a typical Miao mountain village with a history of several hundred years. The entire village is built of stone and has a complete order of spatial control. Its overall system consists of two intersecting sets of concentric circles around adjacent hilltops. One belongs to the Liu clan and the other to the Wang clan; the ratio of Liu to Wang households is 2:3. Their intersection lies in the valley between the hills, where Liu and Wang households mix, along with a few families of other surnames. Under contemporary conditions, this formerly peripheral area has become the village centre. Each set of concentric circles is generated through a logic of self-similar expansion from ‘unit’ to ‘unit group’ to ‘unit cluster’. Specifically, parents' houses and those of their sons and daughters-in-law, alternating through successive generations, enclose a courtyard to form a basic family unit. Several family units surround a slightly larger open yard to form a group of directly related families. Several such groups, responding to the terrain, surround an approximately elliptical yard to form a cluster of extended kin. These clusters ultimately surround the hilltop, fulfilling rituals of ancestral and mountain worship and establishing a complete spatial system of clan organisation. Bailong thus repeatedly employs the enclosing configuration of its basic units, expanding through self-similarity into a progressively ranked relationship of spatial control. This is a model of hierarchical isomorphism, with the enclosed courtyard as its basic framework. Essentially, it is a variation on the traditional model of unit addition. Bailong also contains a particular geographical order acting upon bodily perception. Under the influence of places associated with legends and views of the countryside, distinct sites of spatial perception are distributed in an ordered way: a lane of ‘listening’ at the east, one of ‘touch’ at the south, one of ‘light’ at the west and one of ‘stone forest’ at the north. By combining specially treated spaces with a branching system of paths, this particular geographical structure effectively activates the body's perceptual system. In short, Bailong establishes a stable yet active spatial condition through two concurrent orders of spatial control: hierarchical isomorphism derived from kinship and a geographical structure that regulates bodily perception.

Hierarchical Nesting of Everyday and Commemorative Functional Groups

The Bailong Folk Culture Complex occupies one side of an open space where the two hills meet, and therefore naturally participates in the village's overall order of spatial control. Its programme can be divided into everyday functions—the village committee, library, clinic, activity room and meeting room—and commemorative functions, comprising exhibitions of history and traditional crafts. Everyday functional volumes enclose a square courtyard to form a first-level isomorphic group. This group and the commemorative volume then surround an elliptical courtyard to form a second level. Through these two levels, the complex participates in the village's higher-level isomorphism. The square courtyard is deliberately made a stone court sensitive to the sound of rain; the elliptical court seeks to hold the sky and evoke Bailong's distinctive ‘Legend of the Nine Dragons’. These treated courtyards, together with coloured light in the exhibition hall, combine with branching paths to regulate bodily sensitivity…

The Replacement of Experience

Bailong Miao Village directly confronts the powerful penetration of generally applicable technologies and a standardised, procedural, data-driven and professionalised system of construction management marked by a ‘forgetting of being’. To villagers, a house is something a few groups of people build through their own physical effort; yet it must now pass through approval by several abstract levels of government, review against standards and quality inspections, while also being influenced by multiple investors and professional design organisations. This is genuinely difficult and bewildering, but it is also an irreversible process in which one form of experience replaces another. At the same time, extensive damage to the local habitat, severe rocky desertification and a shortage of forests have led to strict restrictions on stone quarrying and tree felling. With little systematic research into rural construction and the onset of large-scale new countryside development, generally applicable technologies have understandably spread because they are mature, inexpensive, supported by many skilled workers, highly standardised, governed by comprehensive regulations and capable of assuring safety. Yet the habitual thinking inherent in their standardisation and proceduralisation inevitably and ruthlessly extinguishes the particular qualities of rural settlements and suppresses the human desire to express life. How to preserve this precious bodily experience while generally applicable technologies replace traditional construction has become Bailong's immediate reality. The most fundamental distinction between such technologies and traditional building experience is not a difference in structural techniques or material use. It is whether the relationship between people and things is respected, whether the latent character of things is activated, and whether an atmosphere of living with the divine and the immeasurable is captured. These depend upon bodily experience in construction. The Bailong Folk Culture Complex uses frame and brick-and-concrete structures, a typical form of generally applicable construction that is efficient and meets the government's schedule. Walls follow the conventional assembly of base and finish. The base uses locally produced cement-sand bricks; the finish consists of thin, inexpensive and abundant slabs of sedimentary bluestone, whose surfaces take on distinctly different expressions in different weather. The cement-brick base chiefly provides load-bearing capacity and insulation, but its high porosity makes it permeable. The surface strips of bluestone resist moisture and water penetration while also constructing atmosphere and imparting an emotionally charged texture. Spatially, several disassembled containers of experience are inserted into abstract geometrical forms, like the ‘fantastic entities’ in Borges's writing, awakening the building's bodily sensitivity.
