Impression City Complex draws on the movement of calligraphic strokes to shape a group of buildings combining commerce, offices and housing. A low podium forms a continuous base along the street, while the taller volumes adjust their orientation to the river and surrounding topography. Differences in height and depth, together with the gaps between them, articulate the dense building group above this shared base.
The flowing lines of the local calligraphic tradition are developed through the buildings’ side walls, corners and roof profiles. Pale side walls rise along the towers and curve over their tops, framing dark glazed elevations. As adjacent volumes step past one another, these curved edges recur at different heights and depths, giving the composition a continuous but varied movement. The apparent solidity of the side walls contrasts with the lightness of the glazing, while broad outlines frame the close rhythm of the floor lines. Changing viewpoints reveal different combinations within a recognisable family of forms.
The finer divisions of the façades draw on the organisation of local wood carvings and lattice windows. Horizontal and vertical lines overlap with window openings of different sizes, introducing variations in density within the repeated floors. This intricate grid is contained by a continuous curved outline, establishing a clear hierarchy between detail and mass. The undulating edge of the podium carries the same line back to street level. References to local culture thus take form in the relationship between the overall silhouette, façade divisions and street frontage.
