The Audiovisual Media & Education Hub brings technical research, content production and education together in a group of campus buildings. Connected building wings and communal gardens provide a shared setting for collaboration between industry and teaching. The project gives spatial form to the sharing of computing services and educational resources, establishing close everyday connections between research, production and learning.

Situated between the campus sports field and the hillside, elongated wings run in parallel and are linked by a continuous low-rise base. A platform above the base extends between the wings to form a shared space across the complex. Parallel buildings and transverse paths make up a “flattened grid”: functional units retain a degree of independence while shared circulation and activity spaces allow people to move between them. The need for collaboration becomes a network of physical connections. Red volumes and white façade elements continue the colour relationships of the existing campus, connecting the new complex with its educational setting.

The “network garden” unfolds across this platform. Courtyards, planted beds, walls of varying heights and small volumes alternate along the paths, dividing the space between the wings into more intimate places for movement and pause. Intersecting routes maintain connections across the ensemble, while courtyards with different degrees of enclosure offer settings for discussion, rest or solitude. The order of the grid extends from the arrangement of the buildings into the garden, combining a legible overall organisation with the varied scales of daily life.
