Dream Stream is a group of courtyard homes stepping along a hillside, exploring how the experience of moving through a Chinese garden can become part of everyday dwelling. Rooms, courts and branching paths interweave across the complex terrain: rooms accommodate domestic life, courts bring the sky, water, planting and seasons into the home, and bridges, stairs and walkways connect homes at different levels, passing through, around or above their courts. From the shared walkways into individual homes and on through successive courts, movement alternates with pauses, allowing the spaces of home to unfold gradually. A courtyard can be encountered again from another height or direction, giving the daily journey home the loops and changing perspectives of a garden walk.

Further divisions within the courts create subtle transitions between shared life and domestic privacy. Paths pass through or around them; bridges cross above rooms to reach a court within a court. Water, bamboo, magnolia and exposed rock give each pause a particular character, changing with the light, wind and seasons. The courts regulate movement while holding fragments of nature that can awaken memory. Living, resting and gathering take place around these openings, bringing domestic activity into close contact with the landscape. Rooms, courts and routes interweave, allowing the experience of home to unfold over time.

This spatial complexity rests on a clear construction discipline. Terraced fields suggest how a slope can be understood as a series of local horizontal surfaces; regional timber houses demonstrate how a frame can accommodate changes in level. A repeated structural grid coordinates terrain, rooms and courts. A full-scale bamboo framework erected on site allowed bodily scale, ground conditions and foundation positions to be tested directly. Reinforced concrete was adopted to work with established local construction skills. Discrete points of contact with the ground limit disturbance to the hillside, while the grid provides a consistent basis for construction in stages and adjustments on site.

The regular frame and branching routes allow different households to develop their own ways of living within a shared order. Walking, pausing, wandering and returning connect this loose collection of homes, drawing landscape and memory into daily life. Dream Stream gives dwelling the depth of a garden journey, leaving room for discovery along the familiar way home.
