IMPRESSION OF
WESTLINE STUDIO AND WEI HAOBO

Day was just breaking. Beyond the indistinct window lay a hazy world. Rain fell softly outside, lending the air a quiet stillness.

Before leaving, they checked their equipment once more: laptop, distance meter, projector, laser pointer, camera, tape measure, rain gear and tall rubber boots. Once everything was ready, Haobo Wei led the West-Line team—architects, structural engineers and building services engineers—out for a day on site.

The journey to the site

There were few cars on the city streets that morning. Their driver soon took the SUV out of the city and towards the mountains, alternating between flat highways and winding mountain roads. Suddenly, towering green mountains seemed to rush towards them, and they found themselves apparently poised beside a precipice: a dramatic driving experience. Yet warning signs for landslides and mudflows repeatedly urged passing vehicles to take care, sending a chill through the travellers. As they climbed, wet mist enveloped them and visibility fell below ten metres. Between November and February, the extreme damp could produce severe ice on the ground. With the road wet and slippery and visibility down to two or three metres, the vehicle could only inch forwards.

Proceeding in fits and starts, the West-Line team would spend six or seven hours on these roads before reaching a project. Some sites lay deeper in the mountains, beyond the end of the road. Here the tall rubber boots came into their own: the team followed muddy construction tracks into the site. It was often two or three in the afternoon before the day’s site work could properly begin.

Barefoot doctors

On arrival, everyone got to work: asking the foreman to bring order to the untidy site; checking whether workers had followed the techniques explained on the previous visit; setting up the projector and using physical models to demonstrate; and showing workers, hands-on, how to process materials and lay masonry. Before they knew it, dusk had fallen. They drove back to the county town to stay overnight, set out early the next morning to advise on two or three nearby sites, and then hurried home.

This is how West-Line works, spending roughly a third of its time travelling in this way. It is also an authentic picture of construction at the grassroots in western China. Compared with the technically demanding, complex construction and dazzling array of materials found in the large coastal cities of the east, it is a very rudimentary way of working. Yet precisely this condition produces a direct experience of building across the vast territory of western China. Moving between towns and villages throughout the year, Haobo Wei jokes: “We feel a little like barefoot doctors.”

寻路Finding a path

Wei and his colleagues have long grown used to roads that may become dangerous at any moment. Many architects working in western China, he says, have similar experiences. To me, however, while most architects might accept one or two such trips, few would persist if this occupied a third of their time for seven or eight years.

Why had Wei returned to the relatively underdeveloped west to practise, instead of pursuing a career in a major city? Many people may share my question. He had graduated with excellent results from the postgraduate programme at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Chongqing Jianzhu University, with opportunities to join major design institutions and universities. Instead, he chose to teach at Huaqiao University, hoping its quiet environment would allow him to think about what he wanted. This was perhaps the most relaxed period of his career. Apart from teaching, he spent his days in the library or listening to the tides by the sea. He undertook almost no building projects, and those he did were highly standardised, using established systems. They offered little of what he was looking for.

“I felt that my direction might lie elsewhere. Although I could not yet clearly define the ideal I was pursuing, I thought I might find my way in Guizhou. It has many fascinating traditions, and those valuable things were disappearing. I felt I had to return home before they vanished, to find something that was my own.” As Wei spoke, his eyes shone with hope.

Complex terrain, a rich vernacular world, deep cultural histories, intriguing stories and legends, contemporary fashions: it is this mixture that gives present-day Guizhou its distinctive appeal and drew Wei home to explore it. In his eyes, Guizhou is at once familiar and mysterious.

Its landscapes: mountains beyond mountains, constricted passages, narrow slits of sky, steep slopes and winding routes—extraordinary works of nature.

Its people: living in a state of coexistence with nature and legend.

Its villages: simple and close to their original state, yet mixed with imitations of fashionable symbols.

Its cities: fashionable, densely concentrated, and developing on an enormous scale.

Yet contemporary construction in Guizhou lacks content that reflects the particular conditions of its own time.

Returning to Guizhou amid this immense urban development, Wei initially took on large urban projects, becoming the chief designer for several major government commissions in the province. To most people, this would seem perfectly natural: continue along that path and become the head of an organisation—what could be better? But for Wei, this was not the condition in which a true builder should work. Coastal-city architecture was too elitist. Simply adopting its mature technical systems would make it difficult to develop his own approach, or to create architecture belonging to Guizhou. But where was the path?

An encounter with the vernacular

His first sustained engagement with rural work came through China’s “New Socialist Countryside” policy. Tu Bizhong, then Deputy Director of Guiyang’s Construction Bureau and an older friend of Wei’s, discussed approaches to rural development with him. Wei’s first in-depth rural investigation brought two contrasting experiences. On one hand, vernacular life was plain, natural and unpretentious. People placed great importance on bodily sensation; the body could become acutely sensitive to the slightest movement of wind or grass and to mountains and flowing water. This precious experience, so absent from contemporary design, deeply moved him. On the other hand, the isolation of rural communities made their inhabitants eager for novelty. Without a sound understanding of building, however, villages were filling with shoddily built houses and incongruous styles. The outwardly glamorous but empty products of the outside world were displacing the fresh, natural simplicity of rural life.

This investigation taught Wei that attending to bodily sensation did not necessarily require traditional materials or traditional craftsmanship. What mattered was respecting the textures and continuities of the vernacular, and recognising the presence of the sensing body. Only attention to this living perception could animate construction. He also realised that design could be inspired only by taking root in the locality and understanding the land closely. Combining such experiences with contemporary thought might generate further, unexpected ideas.

In 2004, Wei and like-minded colleagues founded West-Line Studio. Its name expresses an exploration of appropriate building systems for southwestern China.

第一次The first attempt

West-Line’s systematic rural practice began in 2004 with the Mengxi Bitan mountain housing development in Huaxi, on the outskirts of Guiyang. The client wanted to explore a model for mountain housing, but financial difficulties reduced the design fee to only seven or eight yuan per square metre. Wei was ultimately moved by the client’s sincerity and also saw an opportunity to begin practising in the countryside. Thus West-Line’s mountain construction work began.

The difficulties were much greater than expected. This was West-Line’s first rural building project, and the team lacked experience of local construction methods, workmanship and material supplies. It was also their first relatively large development on such complex, steep terrain. The topography posed a severe challenge to architects and structural engineers alike. Safety became the most fundamental issue: only once it was resolved could their architectural ideas be realised.

Those early days were hard, with great intellectual pressure and severe financial constraints. Many designers could not stay and left, but West-Line eventually withstood the pressures. Wei later recalled: “In a sense, the early Mengxi Bitan project taught us through practice. We wanted to deploy everything we had learned, yet actual construction and all its constraints inevitably tested our knowledge and ideas.” This experimental building process drove him to think ever more deeply and left enduring research questions for later work, including the “branching-path system” and the “secondary subdivision of public space” discussed in the dialogues that follow.

This attempt also established a firm foundation for West-Line’s later mountain buildings in rural areas. The experience enabled the team to assess complex terrain quickly and begin designing creatively. After this commission, another Huaxi project followed: the Bailong Miao Village Cultural Complex in Shiban Town. With the first project behind them, they could now apply more fully developed construction ideas with clearer purpose.

Support from an older brother

With experience in Guiyang, West-Line hoped to undertake more rural projects. Most were government commissions, however, and direct appointments were difficult to obtain without the right opportunity. Wei says he owes particular thanks to Hong Liu, whom he affectionately calls his older brother. A steadfast defender of his hometown’s history and environment, Hong was also a professional builder. Faced with the frustrations and powerlessness of design practice, he had entered public service, becoming an essential technical adviser and gatekeeper for the local government. With his wholehearted support, West-Line’s exploratory “Up to Mountains & Down to Villages” projects took root in Chishui.

Recalling their first encounter, Wei says that one day Hong suddenly appeared in his office: “I have an opportunity for you to build something worthwhile in Chishui. Chishui needs good things. Come!” That unexpected visit made possible the series of projects presented in this special issue.

West-Line’s distinctive building methods and the resulting architecture differed both from local traditions and from the mass of construction in cities. Many local officials found the designs difficult to accept. Hong resisted pressure from all sides so that West-Line could practise and develop its building system with as few obstacles as possible. The studio thereby gained valuable practical experience in bringing generally applicable construction methods into vernacular systems.

体验Experience

West-Line did not disappoint Hong. When the Bamboo Forest project was completed, local officials and residents were astonished: could a building really be made like this? Perhaps because the studio’s thinking and construction logic arose from the vernacular, these largely non-professional visitors appreciated the work and were deeply moved by its atmosphere. Wei says this showed him that direct experience is architecture’s most immediate power—far greater than ornate verbal description or abstruse professional analysis.

This experience also reached local villagers. West-Line often builds with blue-grey stone slabs and folded pitched roofs incorporating coloured glazing. Seeing these methods, villagers adopted them in their own buildings. They adapted them to their experience and practical needs, or developed the ideas further: placing coloured glass where it was useful, introducing light wells, or allowing trees to grow through houses.

Wei believes that these actions show villagers are not treating the buildings merely as structures or collections of symbols. They have truly understood the designs. They begin to notice light in daily life and to attend to the dialogue between people, trees and sky—precisely what he hopes to see.

Schizophrenia”

Alongside these rural projects, West-Line, like other practices, continues to undertake substantial urban construction. I asked Wei: “Surely building in the city is less arduous. You have nevertheless persisted in rural construction for all these years. How has that felt, physically and mentally?” After a moment’s thought, he surprised me with the words: “A split personality—yes, schizophrenia!”

Seeing my puzzled expression, he explained: “The greatest pleasure architecture gives me is the excitement of thinking. Only sustained intellectual excitement can release an architect’s potential in practice. Designing in the city and in the countryside are entirely different states of being. Moving back and forth between them feels like a mental split.”

For large projects in major cities, West-Line works within mature construction systems, coordinating disciplines on site, with the latest structural methods, advanced technical solutions and comprehensive material samples. Although this process of directing, organising and choosing feels orderly, Wei finds it distant from the reality of building. Perhaps only the day before, the team had been walking muddy rural paths, talking with villagers and workers, considering how to use local materials and how to explain ideas as simply as possible. They had to think through masonry, concrete pouring, the installation of a rooflight, and even which screws to use.

Wei says: “As soon as I enter the countryside, I become a muddy-footed villager, thinking with local people about the simplest and most effective ways to build. This feels like real building, and gives me the greatest pleasure!”

Chinese semi-industrialised construction

Wei describes his nine years of rural construction as “Up to Mountains & Down to Villages”. For him, “going up” results from the constraints of landform, while “going down” reflects mainstream society’s view of the countryside from above; both take that wider society as their reference. The encounter between “up” and “down” generates two directions of professional exploration: “going up” seeks to turn the natural elements of mountains into methods of spatial control, while “going down” explores generally applicable construction informed by vernacular systems.

At the same time, this work puts him under immense pressure. Every construction detail must be carefully considered in a short time, and decisions must be made quickly on site. Many aspects of rural building cannot be controlled. Problems must be solved directly, through the simplest methods, without tricks or elaborate techniques, and limited funds must be spent where they matter most. If something goes wrong, the budget rarely allows it to be done again, and sometimes it is difficult even to repair.

Wei calls this “Chinese semi-industrialised construction”, a faithful reflection of building at the grassroots. It is found not only in villages but throughout China’s underdeveloped regions. West-Line hopes to refine this construction system critically and progressively, and apply it across the less developed southwest. I jokingly described this as his strategy of “surrounding the cities from the countryside”. He smiled without disagreeing.

A spiritual home

“My experiences of rural building are among the happiest and most unforgettable periods of my life. They have taught me a great deal, deepening my understanding of contemporary architecture and helping West-Line’s construction thinking take shape. Contemporary ideas can indeed be realised in the countryside. One can engage tradition while interpreting it through contemporary thought—something impossible in urban construction under the dogmatic control of institutionalised expert systems. In fact, contemporary architectural thinking lies behind all of West-Line’s rural buildings.” This is how Wei sums up his years of rural practice.

We can now understand why Wei has taken root in the countryside. The vernacular is an attachment he cannot relinquish, and the spiritual home of West-Line Studio. With this sincerity and perseverance, the studio will surely go further.

This West-Line special issue comprises six parts, recording nine years of rural practice. Scholars, practising architects and foreign architects contribute their observations, examining the studio’s thinking on contemporary architecture, its search for a contemporary construction philosophy, and its development of a generally applicable building model for vernacular contexts.

Up to Mountains & Down to Villages

We describe our sustained practice in southwestern China as “Up to Mountains & Down to Villages”. The major political movement of earlier decades brought these two verbs, belonging to different systems of classification, naturally together. Implicitly, they express a shared understanding: the vernacular lies within complex geography, and the relationship between “up” and “down” constitutes a region.

“Going up into the mountains” is a morphological consequence of geography; “going down to the villages” derives from mainstream society’s view of the countryside from above. The distinction rests on a datum that is both geographical and social, taking mainstream society as its reference. Their encounter generates two directions of professional exploration: “going up” seeks to turn geographical constraints and climatic factors into methods of spatial control, while “going down” explores generally applicable construction informed by vernacular systems.

乡土The vernacular

There is the physical, bodily vernacular of actual experience; the metaphysical vernacular of thought produced through language in Han Shaogong’s novel A Dictionary of Maqiao; and the mediated vernacular of the Italian film Malèna, poised between the physical and metaphysical. The vernacular seems to harbour differences, contests, balances and exchanges among technology, media and locality. These may offer West-Line a conceptual opening for investigating vernacular building in modern society.

The vernacular and technology

Returning to the vernacular is a search for the roots of human existence, while technology stresses progress and efficiency. Society can develop properly only when both forces coexist. When people feel spiritually at a loss, they often seek a return to the vernacular—whether physical, metaphysical or somewhere between. At the same time, the vernacular needs transformation. As the basic conditions of life change, people rely on the advancement and maturity of technology to nourish rural life and solve the practical problems of rural construction.

经验Experience

Milan Kundera observed that inexperience is one of the most common conditions of human existence. Moving from a city structured by consumption and production into a face-to-face society of familiarity, or moving from the countryside into the city, requires different kinds of experience. Architects must learn how to adjust when passing from one to the other. Otherwise, they risk introducing technology indiscriminately into a rural society founded on human relations and an intimate connection with nature—a dangerous situation.

方法Method

Understanding rural society as a system may allow us to develop methods for translating its relational values into spatial continuities and textures. This is crucial. Fei Xiaotong’s theory of the differential mode of association prompted our interest in foundational theories supporting the study of the vernacular: Claude Lévi-Strauss’s theories of kinship and territorial relations, Aldo Rossi’s typology, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception. Together they form the methodological background to West-Line’s rural work.

Attention to Guizhou

Not three feet of level ground; diverse ethnic villages; red clothing, silver ornaments, blue wax-resist cloth, black tiles, green bamboo and golden wheat; evergreen trees; sisters; mountains and flowing water; hundred-bird garments; dense old forests; revolutionary memories; mountain songs; bustling fashions; closely packed high-rises. Behind these words lie the interaction and interpenetration of three sets of qualities: geographical, vernacular and those of mainstream society.

The datum: mainstream society as a reference

Mainstream society is the dominant framework and support of today’s human world, a product of established technical institutions and contractual structures. Standard models, multiple replication, regulatory constraints and process-based organisation are its principal features relating to the production of architectural space. They ensure effective control over basic quality, cost and efficiency: human-made objective standards. Yet this datum is founded on universality. Nature and the vernacular offer possibilities that escape it, questioning technological society’s forgetting of other possible forms of existence. Their presence makes the contradiction visible.

Standardised control

Standardised control is central to general construction, aligned with industrial policy and national interests, and difficult for individuals to alter. Its mature technologies, Euclidean geometry, low costs, large pool of skilled workers, high degree of standardisation, comprehensive regulations and guarantees of safety and quality naturally provide the basic technical support for regional practice.

Three critical stages of control

Stage one: discover the essential structure of the vernacular.

Stage two: establish a mechanism for spatial control.

Stage three: break down formal and spatial relationships into standardised construction controls based on technical regulations.

Models of multiple possibilities

(1) A spatial organisation drifting up and down: an entangled system of branching mountain circulation (imposed), fragmented courtyards (contingent) and densely arranged rooms (functional).

(2) Building through the body: a hierarchically nested structure, a sensory geographical container, and spatial control through the arousal of feeling by scenery.

(3) A dense mechanism of repeated isomorphism: an aggregate “entropic body” of self-similar repetition—a spatial body whose state changes indeterminately, with permeable boundaries.

(4) Lying concealed in the past: concealment does not necessarily mean betrayal. It retains certain structural unities with its host, yet holds another intent, hiding an inner world at odds with its exterior. At this historical focal point, beneath the weight of the historical surface, contemporaneity appears unexpectedly.

(5) Producing atmosphere: a distinctive spatial system of perceptible states, amorphous enveloping substances and solid enclosures. It is a field in which bodily perception interacts with the material world, hovering between the measurable and the immeasurable.

(6) Subtle transformation: a support, an exemplary object, an enclosing body and an emotional variable form the basic spatial arrangement of a courtyard-based educational mechanism. Carefully combining these spatial and climatic conditions produces meaning without words. Thought is shaped almost unconsciously, bringing a spiritual pleasure through which education occurs subtly.

(7) Producing scenes: establish a spatial control system structured as a “field”. Scenes of different kinds respond to different environmental interfaces, while a ground-plane system integrates these directional responses to produce the field’s collective intent.

(8) “Well” space: the well is an archetype shared by caves, pits, mine shafts, water wells and light wells. It consists of an opening and a chamber, characterised by strong enclosure, echoes, muffled sounds, progressively diminishing light and a framed view of the sky. Because wells are focal points of geography and survival, they develop into loose networks growing outwards from local centres. The Chinese expression jingjing youtiao—orderly and well organised—aptly projects this systemic structure.

Possibility” + “a view of technology”

The working framework of “possibility” plus “a view of technology” has three levels of meaning:

第一,观念层面—一存在的可能性与技术的“半自为”性。对人的存在的可能性的关注正是试图从观念层面纠正技术至上所导致的本末倒置的现实,遏制技术的自为力量;

First, the conceptual level: possibilities of existence and technology’s “semi-autonomy”. Attention to possible forms of human existence seeks to correct the reversal of means and ends produced by technological supremacy, and to restrain technology’s autonomous force.

第二,领域层面——现实与超现实的工作平台,在现实里发现非现实的人和物,保护其中闪烁着人性光芒的具体生活逃过“对存在的遗忘”;

Second, the domain of work: a platform spanning the real and the surreal. Discover extraordinary people and things within reality, protecting those specific lives in which humanity shines from the “forgetting of Being”.

Third, the methodological level: discovery → proposition → experiment → realisation. Discovery selects and judges among possibilities; proposition systematises them to establish a conceptual model; experiment tests that model’s practical feasibility; and realisation applies it maturely with the support of technology.

Building on these three meanings, West-Line began to seek ways of working, guided by a vision of sustainable development, that address different possible realities and better serve the human “lifeworld”.

再生Regeneration

Traditional rural building in western China constitutes a complete system of mountain-and-wilderness poetics. Centred on human relations (social structure), wildness (the unorthodox), poetics (feeling aroused by scenery), and the relationship between mountains and water, it uses hierarchically nested structures as the framework for spatial growth. Attentive to the body, it handles the relationship between people and nature with maturity and feeling. West-Line’s “Up to Mountains & Down to Villages” series seeks to develop these essential spatial structures, connect them with generally applicable technologies, and regenerate this way of living in a contemporary setting.

Founded in 2004, West-Line Studio is an atypical practice within the typical institutional framework of Chinese architecture. Based in the west and rooted in the vernacular, it has continued to find its way through practice, gradually forming its own architectural language without allowing it to harden into a formula. As it matures, it retains its sensitivity to culture, history, locality and emotion.

DIALOGUE

Dialogue 1: Professor Fangji Wang in conversation with West-Line Studio

Fangji Wang and Haobo Wei

(School of Architecture in Granada)博士研究生答辩委员。

Fangji Wang: Professor at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University; PhD; research in architectural design and theory. Contributing editor of Time + Architecture; editorial board member of World Architecture; invited academic convenor for The Architect; and doctoral examination committee member at the School of Architecture in Granada, Spain.

Haobo Wei: Principal of West-Line Studio; Professor-level Senior Architect; recipient of the State Council Special Government Allowance and the 2010 Architectural Society of China Young Architect Award; Design Director of Guiyang Architectural Investigation and Design Co., Ltd.; Master of Architecture, Chongqing Jianzhu University.

Fangji Wang: After learning about West-Line’s recent designs, we began a series of conversations. They concern architects’ thinking and ways of living while practising in western China, recording many of the studio’s reflections on design.

Fangji Wang: When I visited West-Line while passing through Guiyang, I noticed how closely its architects followed contemporary developments. I later learned that Haobo Wei had taken the team abroad several times to study buildings. What struck you most when you encountered buildings that you had previously seen in magazines?

West-Line: In recent years, we have established one or two focused professional study trips each year. Three months beforehand, we begin selecting and analysing destinations, arranging the itinerary and studying collectively, identifying questions and uncertainties. We investigate those questions on site and complete thematic reports afterwards, linked to our remuneration and reward system. The trips are thus learning assignments that contribute substantially to the team’s professional development. I (Wei) have always considered direct experience of architecture essential. Reading about the red and blue Modulor series, I was often bewildered by scholars’ endless debates over Le Corbusier’s contradictory uses of them. Yet inside his late seaside cabin at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in France, I suddenly understood what a precise system of spatial generation the Modulor could be. Through numerical relationships, it coordinates people, objects, light and surroundings. The exact control of this minimal dwelling profoundly influenced me. I had memorised the plans, sections and elevations of Ronchamp and Firminy, but forgot them on arrival: I was drawn instead to the atmosphere of light produced by deliberately modulated illumination, particular spatial containers and materials. In buildings studied and considered for years, the things that interest us on site often differ greatly from what seemed important in books. Perhaps this stems from the fundamental difference between abstract intellectual transmission and architecture’s material existence.

Buildings in magazines are presented more visually and summarily than in systematic monographs. Reading can reveal spatial organisation, key design-generating decisions and formal characteristics. Understanding why those decisions were made, or the circumstances behind a material system, requires wider investigation. Entering the actual setting often resolves questions easily and shifts our attention. On paper, Murcia Town Hall puzzled me. Standing at the focal point of the great radiating lines of its Baroque square, however, I understood how Rafael Moneo had brought past and present into accord through layered historical relationships. Similarly, the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art, tucked into the shadow of old buildings at a small, secluded square beneath the hill, felt solid and clear; in print it had appeared cool and alien. I wondered whether this harmony arose from the elementary geometries and proportional systems known since Plato and Archimedes.

Fangji Wang: Have the reflections arising from these journeys directly influenced West-Line’s subsequent practice?

West-Line: They have helped us greatly. Since 2007 we have developed a “dense organisation through repeated isomorphism” derived from the bamboo forest in Chishui, Guizhou. Translating a natural prototype into an effective spatial control system at scale required further thought, yet reference material was scarce. In January 2012, I unexpectedly came upon the construction site of the Royal Collections Museum in Madrid and was delighted. I had planned to visit Mansilla and Tuñón’s office the following year, but sadly Mansilla died—a kindred spirit I had never met was gone. Late last year, I made a special trip to the León Auditorium and MUSAC. Their work on repetition and difference was distinctive and remarkably accomplished.

Travelling is a rare opportunity for experience. It clarifies what we should hold on to, what we should learn, and what we should reconsider.

Fangji Wang: European architects have recently come to China to exchange ideas and work with West-Line. What similarities and differences have you found in working together?

West-Line: Both our European colleagues and West-Line value effective research platforms, core concepts and methodological systems. The Europeans are systematic in detailed analysis and control, working with great precision; we stress the ability to grasp critical issues quickly and to resolve priorities in analysis, design and construction, reflecting current conditions in western China. They pursue professional depth through orderly, incremental development, while Chinese practice tends to coordinate professional work with political economy. In addressing tradition, they retain a modernist position, using specific methods to develop particular contexts precisely at a given time, place and within a given cultural sphere. For them, heritage is an accumulation of countless presents. China is less mature in this respect, and through “Up to Mountains & Down to Villages” we seek another possibility rooted in rural human relations. Their apparently extraordinary inventions project ideas about life, professional intelligence and technical insight. Here, regulations are often followed dogmatically without understanding their underlying principles, leaving little room for invention. Many European colleagues are consummate architects on paper; Chinese colleagues are tireless practitioners. Europeans benefit from a fully developed modernist system and thorough training, whereas we learn through practice. They work slowly and carefully; we cut through problems at speed. They enjoy work and life; we work late into the night under intense pressure. Above all, I envy their environment for professional growth: centuries of great architecture and brilliant thinking accompany their lives.

Fangji Wang: As a practice rooted in a particular region, especially after gaining a direct understanding of architectural practice abroad, how do you see the present situation in China? Do you still need to find new openings?

West-Line: The west is developing rapidly, yet professional conditions are severe. What future awaits a region with such a vast vernacular world? Observing and working with European colleagues, we are struck by their engagement with difference and similarity, and with the interaction of past and present in dealing with tradition. Their thinking across different systems is also revealing. How can fragile rural communities respond to the current scale of construction in the west? Must it remain a masquerade in traditional symbols, or a commercial show using tradition as bait? Will local human relationships disappear, replaced by projections of urban structures? How can the vernacular grow under contemporary conditions? We must confront these questions. Each era needs a professional direction, each region its own architectural thinking, each profession its discourse, and each team its aspirations. If all are missing, building becomes an embarrassment and difference inevitably disappears. How impoverished is a profession that will not face local reality or establish the research and working platforms needed to address it! The disconnection between professional practice and local conditions is dangerous; overcoming it is our point of departure.

Fangji Wang: Many of your projects rely on basic construction to achieve their form and detail, with little opportunity for a second layer of correction such as a curtain wall—perhaps only paint or tiles. If you find mistakes on site, for instance wrongly cast concrete, how do you adjust? Can you give an example?

West-Line: Initially, with little rural experience, we were reactive when mistakes occurred. We would analyse the affected material and structural systems, decide what could be retained, or introduce a new system to compensate. At the Bailong Miao Village Cultural Complex, the curved walls of the oval courtyard were designed as in-situ concrete. The local farming construction team felt the curved pours required too much time and labour, and substituted brick infill in some places without consulting us. A single concrete material system thus became two: load-bearing concrete and cement-brick infill. Insisting on the original structural logic would have destroyed the courtyard’s unity. Meanwhile, some rooms built with locally made cement bricks suffered severe rain penetration because of poor brick quality, making exposed external walls impractical. We considered the two problems together and shifted from structural expression to overall unity as the governing material principle. From the abundant local stone, we selected inexpensive layered blue-grey slabs whose texture changed with the weather, cut into pieces 60 × 240 × 6 mm. These clad the whole building in a single weather-sensitive surface. Their dimensions also reflected the fact that most of the substrate was brick. The oval courtyard was consequently clad as a whole, leaving deliberate patches of exposed concrete only at the top of its ring beam. This experience led us to replace reactive accommodation of mistakes with active prevention.

At Huangpidong Martyrs’ Memorial, we deliberately built preventive measures into the control of several concrete walls. The site was remote, the budget only RMB 300,000–400,000, and the team had limited skills and no experience of exposed concrete. We chose site-mixed concrete because transport was extremely difficult; the hot, humid and corrosive environment caused even stone to discolour and grow mould; concrete could use local materials and blend with the mountain; and it required no maintenance, acquiring the weathered character we desired. Our three lines of control were: first, detailed drawings and site briefings specifying formwork dimensions, pouring methods and release agents, with the construction sequence agreed jointly; second, strict control of vertical and horizontal alignment at the four corners of each wall section; and third, a deliberately ordered field of red five-pointed stars recessed into the concrete.

Together these formed an effective preventive system. The first established disciplined workmanship and workable techniques. The second secured each wall’s overall integrity by controlling its corners. The third allowed bright red stars to turn potentially widespread formwork failures and irregularities into a meaningful, textured wall composition. The formwork problems occurred as anticipated, but were controlled as intended. At the Chishui Exhibition Hall, we knew that large painted surfaces would be prone to cracking and difficult to keep flat. We therefore designed the external walls as dense strips from the outset, integrating this treatment into the overall spatial system.

Fangji Wang: That explains why the exposed concrete at Huangpidong is so expressive without appearing crude. Your “active prevention” is more than experience; it is a process of distillation. You identify practical difficulties and turn them into positive design factors through thinking grounded in the region. Another question: it must be difficult for the studio to survive financially on these projects alone. How do you devote yourselves fully to the work while maintaining income?

West-Line: The studio consists mainly of professional architects and engineers, for whom design is the principal livelihood. A reasonable contemporary standard of living is necessary. Ideals detached from survival are merely idealism, and idealism can fail; ideals must grow from a practical livelihood. Our early years were difficult. Many thought it absurd to insist on good buildings in Guizhou and called me mad. Financial pressures did drive colleagues away, and I too was troubled for a time. But we had to face reality: livelihood and ideals must grow together. Our core organisation gradually developed technical and business systems in parallel. Today, we have an effective technical operating structure and substantial capacity for complex commercial and medium-to-large mixed-use projects.

In recent years we have won a relatively high proportion of medium and large competitions. These projects support the team’s living standards while rapidly strengthening our knowledge of mature design systems, technologies and regulations. They also help us reflect on those systems’ strengths and weaknesses. This environment has sheltered and nurtured “Up to Mountains & Down to Villages”; its rural technical approach has gradually developed under the support of that mature platform. In turn, the rural series guides the team’s technical aspirations and reinforces the architect’s social role as a public intellectual. Long-term grassroots practice has taught me the importance of an architect’s conscience. It can affect the condition of an entire region. Where funds are extremely limited, building requires particular sincerity.

Fangji Wang: Although architects share a pursuit of architecture, each must approach it in ways suited to their circumstances. Compared with architects in the eastern coastal regions, what advantages and difficulties do you encounter in the western interior?

West-Line: We live and work in southwestern China, where complex geographical spaces, surviving traditional settlements and fashionable contemporary life interweave. For an architect, being here at this moment is fortunate: many possible forms of existence can be imagined and realised, and the large number of small and medium public buildings offers opportunities for hands-on exploration. Yet grassroots construction in the west is genuinely arduous. Nearly 30 per cent of our time goes into negotiating and contesting ideas, and another 30 per cent into rough journeys. Even contractors selected through strict tendering can have worrying levels of skill and responsibility. Limited technical options, stringent budgets, an acute shortage of talented architects, the isolation of new ideas, weak professional media coverage, clients’ prejudices and colleagues’ incomprehension must all be overcome step by step. To build something worthwhile here takes courage and resilience. Still, this slower development gives us more time to think and reflect.

Fangji Wang: I understand that your architects also teach. Do you still do so, and how does teaching help your practice?

West-Line: The preliminary investigation for Bailong Miao Village began when we supervised graduation projects by two groups of architecture students from Guizhou University. Discussing anthropological fieldwork with them, we developed bodily research methods based on “listening, singing, touching and seeing”, together with corresponding investigation and analysis procedures. The results were very good. I taught more frequently some years ago, trying approaches different from conventional teaching. Through shared study of basic cases, I sought to help students gradually develop a systematic, clear framework for design. This also involved extensive theoretical study and organisation. Teaching brought us into contact with excellent university teachers’ writings and methods; I followed your own work particularly closely. It was a valuable process of relearning and rethinking. We have been too busy recently, and I miss those teaching days.

Fangji Wang: Speaking of teaching, I would like to know about the education, professional development and formative teachers of West-Line’s principal architects. Their paths may help us understand the development of architects in the west.

West-Line: The main members are of a similar age and come from local intellectual or artistic families. Our parents encouraged sensitivity to nature and culture, and independent thought. We completed undergraduate or postgraduate studies at Chongqing University, Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology and other institutions. All worked in developed coastal cities after graduation, then returned to large design institutes in Guizhou, leading major complex projects. Shared professional interests later brought us together to form West-Line. As a student, I studied with Tang Hua and was deeply influenced by his persistent exploration of the conditions and methods of modern architecture.

Fangji Wang: A more technical question: when you receive a project, do you follow a particular design method?

West-Line: We place importance on three stages. First, identify the basic spatial or operational rules underlying the site, its surroundings or the required programme, and make these the starting point. Second, develop those rules into a mechanism governing the generation of architectural space. Third, consider the material system alongside critical construction controls to secure basic built quality. At the entrance to Bamboo Sea National Forest Park, for example, the bamboo forest’s spatial condition was the natural object of analysis. We identified two important rules. The forest is essentially a dense organisation of extreme repetition and self-similarity, highly sensitive to changes in light and climate. This became the building’s spatial prototype, allowing it to repeat the environment’s structure and conceal itself within it. Deliberately organised light and mist then activate the dense space, allowing it to emerge from that similarity. The building thus has two opposing states: “concealment” and “awakening”. We also chose hollow concrete forms as the support system, suspended the bamboo to assemble the dense space, and used steaming to improve its weather resistance.

Fangji Wang: What kinds of clients commission you, and how do you explain your professional ideas to them?

West-Line: All kinds: government departments, property developers, businesses building for themselves, villages and towns, and individuals. We generally begin with their concerns and gradually establish a reasonable model that addresses them while incorporating our convictions. How much of our intention can be realised depends on everyone’s efforts. Fortunately, more clients now understand architects’ intentions and possess informed judgement, partly through architects’ continuing efforts. Ultimately, one plans with human effort, while success depends on circumstances.

Fangji Wang: Finally, a speculative question. If you designed a small building in an eastern city such as Guangzhou or Shanghai, would you adopt different methods?

West-Line: We have all practised on the coast. An orderly, effective design system must be able to respond to changing realities. West-Line’s system has that capacity.

Dialogue 2: Haoyan Wei in conversation with Haobo Wei

Haoyan Wei and Haobo Wei

Haoyan Wei: Professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, Chongqing University; PhD; head of the university’s research field in urban morphology and space; Deputy Director of the editorial office of the Journal of Human Settlements in West China. His main research areas are urban design and urban morphology. He has led or participated in four projects including National Natural Science Foundation of China research, received seven international competition awards and five ministerial or provincial design awards, co-authored two textbooks and published more than sixty academic papers.

Haoyan Wei: Our names belong to the same series, so it is obvious we are brothers. You are the elder and I the younger; that has been true since childhood and will never change. You design buildings and I work in urban design—close, yet distant. We are usually busy separately, meeting on holidays or because of our parents. This time, happily, our profession brings us together. What attracts me in your work is a seemingly irrepressible wildness. I believe there is a remarkable and necessary connection between an architect’s temperament and the architecture. What do you think?

Haobo Wei: Perhaps my habits of thought, personality and the realities I face shape how and where I address problems. Their mutual balance determines the building’s eventual form. In Guizhou, ordinary grassroots practice means low budgets, limited design and construction skills and tight schedules. These force me to establish simple, additive, easily controlled working models. Repetition and self-similarity allow overall coherence deliberately to take precedence over minute refinement. Applying different degrees of control to different groups of units produces powerful, layered spatial effects. It is like striking a set of drums with varying force: where there is force, there may be wildness.

Haoyan Wei: From the early Mengxi Bitan project to recent completed or ongoing work such as the Bingan Wharf Memorial Hall and the Danxia World Natural Heritage series, I see a welcome change in your methods and forms: you are developing a system of your own, gradually shedding others’ shadows. This is difficult. Architectural design begins by learning from others—masters or ordinary commercial firms—and only a few eventually establish themselves. I have always argued that architects should be judged through their works. In a contemporary context that stresses political-economic relationships, this may seem professionally insular or self-important, yet it also means facing reality and accepting responsibility. If architects attribute everything they build to social, political and economic forces, are they not excusing themselves? What are the key points in developing your own system?

Haobo Wei: Early Mengxi Bitan was, to a degree, an attempt to apply everything we had learned, including research insights we believed in. But actual construction and its constraints inevitably tested those ideas, forcing us to filter and reconsider them: learning through practice. Deep engagement with building prompted continuous reflection. The ideas that flickered like wildfire at Mengxi Bitan left enduring research themes, such as the branching-path system and secondary subdivision of public space. Our systematic working platform was still taking shape, however, so many issues were not fully understood or pursued with clear purpose.

Two years later, at Bailong Miao Village, the design logic had become much clearer. We established a sequence of in-depth investigation → discovery of the village’s essential structure → analysis and development of spatial control mechanisms. This revealed the village’s hierarchically nested structure and bodily approach to building, which we put into practice. Subsequent projects maintained and developed that method. “Dense organisation” and “atmosphere production”, now central to West-Line, emerged from it. We gradually formed a working model based on the characteristic section of Guizhou dwellings—a folded roof over an undulating ground plane—with a dense spatial organisation inserted between. Its key points operate at two levels. Methodologically: discovering the essential vernacular structure, establishing spatial control, and translating formal and spatial relationships into standardised construction controls based on technical regulations. At the level of the building model: (1) matching dense, self-similar repetition with hierarchical nesting to create a graded spatial framework; (2) combining folded roofs and daylight control to produce luminous illusion; (3) using courtyard systems as mechanisms of subtle education; and (4) building through the body.

Haoyan Wei: Speaking of courtyards, I recall visiting West Lake in Hangzhou in mid-to-late March: vast misty water, fine rain and delicate spring green amid lingering cold, with brilliant flowers. That enchanting early spring beautifully complements the old courtyards of Jiangnan. For you, working so long in Guizhou, what emotional attachment and design archetype does the tianjing, or sky well, represent?

Haobo Wei: As a child I attended Jiaxiu Primary School in southern Guiyang. It occupied Cuiwei Garden, one of the old city’s eight scenic sites: a centuries-old complex of pavilions organised around successive courtyards. Reading there amid the sounds of wind and rain profoundly affected me. That pleasure came from an older educational tradition now largely lost, behind which lay the sky well’s subtle mechanism for cultivating an ideal character. A carefully staged courtyard, an exemplary object and the surrounding façades together produce a hierarchical, inward-focused space of elevated meaning. An ordinary object placed in its open centre, acted upon by sun, wind, rain and mist and accompanied by stories depicted in the shallow spaces of the enclosing façades, becomes an admired exemplar. A stone and wintersweet, for instance, might be accompanied by carvings of diligent scholars studying through hardship, conveying without words the lesson that plum-blossom fragrance comes from bitter cold. The essence of this educational mechanism is a careful, unobtrusive synthesis of spatial and climatic conditions, producing meaning silently and shaping thought almost unconsciously. In transmitting educational meaning, the traditional sky well can therefore be considered a fundamental spatial archetype.

Haoyan Wei: Why do you say “sky well” rather than “courtyard”? Your explanation seems equally valid if one substitutes the latter word.

Haobo Wei: That is interesting. I see the sky well as a subset of the courtyard. Courtyards include open, semi-open and enclosed conditions; the sky well is enclosed—strongly so. Its enclosure on all sides and sole opening towards the sky create an extreme archetypal condition. This makes it highly sensitive to sunlight, rain, mist and other climatic factors, allowing them to affect the emotional character of space.

Haoyan Wei: So the sky well emphasises an upward direction and a well-like form and scale. Before modernity, these were closely linked to geography, climate and topography. The contemporary decline of sky wells—and courtyards more generally—relates both to profit-driven spatial production and to widespread artificial lighting. Architects’ interest in them is therefore no longer a fundamental functional need, but a kind of obsession. I believe architects need such obsessions, or, more gently, an almost stubborn longing for certain “useless” spaces. To some extent, architecture’s useless parts prevent it from becoming subordinate to ideology, commercial interests or customary functional requirements. Is your particular affection for sky wells rooted in this?

Haobo Wei: My use of sky wells feels almost innate. They have become something on which my body and emotions depend. Connecting sky above and earth below, the sky well opens a spiritual passage; that connection distils experience and brings insight.

Haoyan Wei: If sky wells are instinctive for you, what about pitched roofs? I have been to Bing’an and like the V-shaped roof that resembles the surrounding old roofs outwardly but differs in spirit. Is this also a spiritual connection?

Haobo Wei: Pitched roofs, especially layer upon layer spreading across a landscape, have great force. That force may come from the mountains and rivers: their rises, falls and transitions compress and release spaces of distinct character. Three qualities make them a rational choice: a folding mechanism that responds flexibly to changing surroundings and spaces; a particular rhythmic energy; and their traditional lineage. At the Bingan Wharf Memorial Hall, the roof first follows the surrounding roofscape to conceal the building. Second, its unconventional V-shape, which also controls light, hints at the difference between exterior and interior. It reveals itself—or, in your words, exposes its identity as an “undercover agent”.

Haoyan Wei: Yes, an undercover agent unable—or more precisely, deliberately unwilling—to remain hidden. Setting cultural tradition aside, I see three formal meanings in pitched roofs: their relationship to the uppermost interior space, to the building’s urban or natural setting, and to geography and climate. They seem particularly advantageous in mountain towns. But roofs made with contemporary general construction must differ greatly from those produced by traditional craft. What is your view?

Haobo Wei: Traditional timber building developed a complete, flexible assembly system of standardised members. The form and pitch changes of its roofs are constrained by the horizontal and vertical spacing of the supporting members that meet the roof. In turn, the weight of the tiles strengthens the framework’s integrity and stability: the parts act upon and depend on one another. Frame and roof structure form a continuous system of linear members enclosing space, with an overall woven texture. Timber’s tension, elasticity and capacity to bend allow hard grey tiles to sit directly on the frame without adhesive. This balance of rigidity and flexibility works even on steep slopes. Overlapping tiles expand and undulate into a woven roof capable of deflection and rebound. General construction cannot readily achieve this lively, flexible system. Its roofs are rigid; because the technical principles differ, roof and structure are relatively separate, freeing the roof as a deformable surface with greater independence. The loss of the traditional roof’s rigid-flexible woven texture is a considerable regret.

Nevertheless, concrete roofs made through general construction can respond freely to objects and settings and undergo topological transformation. Used well, they offer many ways of engaging vernacular conditions. At Foguangyan Visitor Centre, for example, the roof becomes an interesting rainwater system that a traditional roof could not produce. Traditional roofs are woven systems; contemporary general construction produces cast systems. They are fundamentally different, so each should be used to its best advantage. You are reminding me to remain highly sensitive and responsive to changing technical conditions.

Haoyan Wei: During construction, which details do you control closely and which do you treat more freely? Why?

Haobo Wei: We follow a principle of controlling priorities. First come the critical junctions that establish the spatial control system; then the roof and ground; then key locations, interfaces between volumes and important material treatments. I want first to secure the nodes that form the structural and spatial framework, because they determine both the building’s basic quality and the direction of its detailing. Smaller or more individual details can be freer, provided they remain measured and consistent with the main direction. Construction skills in the west are limited; we cannot control everything equally and must choose our targets.

West Line: looking forward to rural

We are walking across the Bamboo sea in Chisui, up North in Guizhou province. It is May 2012. It took us seven hours to get there from Guiyang, snaking our way along the old road, which is (at that time) about to be exchanged for a brand new highway. We step on a pathway designed by West Line and we have the feeling of wandering a virginal environment, as if there was no human intervention at all, as if the project was part of the nature. That is the power of their architecture, an architecture that aims for rooting in the place, the history and, above all, the people and the local culture. An architecture made of local materials, using renewed ancient techniques, but not for that a bit less contemporary.

For a second I remember the interesting night-walk around Seville, our motherland in Spain, long ago, the first time West Line and Baum met. That day we all discussed about buildings and architecture until very late. That day our friendship began and we established the strong links between our offices that still last.

In a hyper-accelerated China, looking back to rural is a manifesto itself. Pardon me, I just said “looking back”, but what they actually do IS “looking forward to rural”, maybe the only way of sustainable development.

West Line has the rare ability of the “transversal thinking” and that means that they develop long-term concepts through many diverse projects, recovering the “calm reflection” architecture needs, overcoming endemic Chinese uncertainty, construction problems or crazy deadlines to erect a coherent architectural speech, contemporarily nested on tradition.

This interview gave us the chance of talking deeper into their most interesting projects.

June 2013, Marta Barrera, Javier Caro, Miguel Gentil.

Baums Lab:

BAUMS Lab: Your architecture seems deeply rooted in the place where it is built, establishing multiple relationships with its surroundings and local traditions while remaining firmly contemporary. It tries to disappear into, and merge with, an existing setting. Yet in today’s culture of architectural spectacle, that very approach becomes a call—a call to return to the fundamentals of building. Has this way of developing your work emerged naturally, or through deliberate reflection?

West-Line: Our approach emphasises observing, analysing and understanding a particular place’s spatial organisation, human relationships and atmosphere. We seek an opening through which to establish an affinity with the locality, allowing a new building to enter the site’s existing mechanisms as naturally as water dissolving into water.

Yet this insertion, while respecting that affinity, also introduces a strong element of difference. Within a contemporary intellectual framework, we seek to make the new building reveal and develop the mechanisms that govern the place’s spatial production. We attend to changes over time in critical aspects of construction, and to the analysis and renewed growth of its basic spatial archetypes. In short, we aim to identify the fundamental controls within local building traditions and develop them in ways suited to the time and to contemporary general construction technologies. We call this “general construction through vernacular mechanisms”. Natural growth and deliberate reflection reinforce one another. West-Line has developed amid Guizhou’s triangular relationship between particular natural conditions, densely distributed traditional settlements and a rich contemporary life, each carrying different weight in different locations. This has cultivated a bodily sensitivity that responds quickly to a place’s essential qualities. That sensitivity guides our work, while rational reflection in turn deepens it.

BAUMS Lab: Your relationship with vernacular technologies particularly interests us. Our mutual friend Professor Francisco Gómez of the University of Seville often explains, on his travels through Latin America, that architects should reconsider and learn from local building traditions through contemporary eyes. Re-examining typologies, construction methods and how people use buildings may offer a good starting point. Your recent projects seem to have developed a construction system through this approach. We particularly admire the low-tech solutions at Foguangyan Visitor Station in Chishui: simple, clear details and inventive, practical methods guide local workers in using local materials, while raising questions about how the contemporary world should regard tradition. How do you approach “doing as the locals do”? Is low technology a means of self-expression, a technology better suited to the place, or a way of overcoming low construction standards without losing the design idea?

West-Line: More precisely, our vernacular technical approach is the targeted use of general technologies, based on an understanding of rural society’s underlying social structures and building principles. We immerse those technologies in a social structure founded on the “differential mode of association”, and in familiar relationships between people and things. Technology thereby serves a living lifeworld and plural forms of existence, producing diverse technical systems and approaches for different rural realities.

Milan Kundera noted that inexperience is a common condition of human existence. Moving from city to countryside, or countryside to city, requires different experience. Architects need to adjust when passing between them. Otherwise, problems arise—for example, the indiscriminate introduction of general technologies into a rural society whose basic structure is human relationships. That is dangerous.

Understanding rural society through its social structure makes it possible to develop methods that translate relational values into spatial control. Fei Xiaotong’s “differential mode of association” led us towards theories relevant to rural research, including Lévi-Strauss on kinship and territorial relations, and Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of bodily perception. These form a theoretical platform that we carry into practice. Previously, we tended to focus on a traditional village’s formal structure, materials and symbols. This methodology revealed two orders beneath appearances. One is the generative order of “bodies”: each household is a complete unit; units combine into larger complete groups, which expand into still larger clusters while repeating the original structure. This is a graded spatial relationship, a self-similar progression from body to group to cluster—a hierarchically nested structure that stabilises the village’s growth. The other is the order of bodily perception. In a Guizhou alley, a roadside rock may press you towards a cold wall, or a crooked tree projecting from behind it may make you bend your body and lower your head. Your senses are quietly activated. Traditional villages harbour a whole series of techniques for controlling the body.

Discovering these two structures meant that we were beginning to grasp the basic threads of vernacular spatial production. Our work developed from them, identifying three underlying principles: hierarchical nesting, bodily construction and branching paths. Bringing these into design allows us to grasp critical aspects of how rural space is produced. Form becomes secondary, serving the spatial system. New materials and technologies can therefore achieve comparable effects; what matters is extracting the village’s essential spatial framework. Jørn Utzon’s additive architecture is a good example. We hope to turn the rich intellectual achievements of the twenty-first century into productive tools, discovering fundamental regional principles and using methodology to understand their underlying relationships.

BAUMS Lab: We consider the Bingan Wharf Memorial Hall one of your finest works, achieving a remarkable accord with tradition and the vernacular. There is a secret inner world: at the centre of this historical setting, beneath the restored, weighty historical surface, contemporaneity appears unexpectedly. The space creates a moment of arrested history and a particular sensibility that extend beyond the building itself. New and old remain in tension—a related contradiction, a hard and soft junction between traditional and modern architecture. Their collision makes us feel we are in both a museum and a granary. How did you conceive this wonderful timber space?

West-Line: The memorial occupies the site of a century-old house on the main street of Bing’an, a thousand-year-old town beside the Chishui River in northern Guizhou. The house had accommodated the Red Army headquarters and corps commander Lin Biao. It was too dilapidated to retain, so rebuilding on the same site was necessary, with the exterior largely preserving its former appearance. This modest old-house approach—without distancing, estrangement or deliberate grandeur—corresponded in a sense to the Red Army’s circumstances at the time. There is no ceremonial gateway, square, central axis or ascending spatial sequence. The memorial nestles among old houses, as it once did among ordinary people. Constraints produced this “old” condition. Inside, however, only 286 square metres across two floors made usable space extremely tight. We needed a permeable space that would make the small feel large: a dense array of vertical timber slats.

This dense slatted space has three roles. First, views pass through the timber screens, extending the perceived space. Second, they provide backgrounds for exhibition images and enclosures for objects. Third, their density creates an extreme spatial type. Vertical timbers measuring 6 × 10 centimetres and rising almost eight metres cover nearly the entire interior in repeated arrays, weaving a strong three-dimensional texture. They screen without entirely blocking and invite deep views without fully revealing. Sight and hearing become entangled between openness and closure, near and far, large and small. The dense timber array creates a single, pure enclosure. External stimuli—yellow, red and clear rooflights—are amplified by this timber field into powerful forces, producing a richly textured, interwoven light environment that writes revolutionary memory through light. Atmosphere replaces order and ritual as the building’s centre. In a sense, contemporary education replaces inherited ceremonial instruction.

The description “both memorial and granary” is apt. Bing’an’s old houses have narrow frontages and deep plans, with full-height central spaces lit by several rooflights. Light passing through suspended dust creates a half-lit atmosphere in which one can almost smell old grain. The dense slatted space is also clearly related to the organisational mechanism developed at Bamboo Forest.

Baums Lab:

BAUMS Lab: I was deeply impressed by your first conceptual sketch for the Bamboo Forest entrance: fragments of bamboo becoming denser until they generated the reception pavilion. Architecture truly merges into the existing environment—the bamboo forest’s entropic body. The paths use the ground on which they stand, winding through the forest as if they had existed for a million years. This is architecture with blurred limits and no edge. How do you treat its boundaries and its junction with the surrounding environment?

West-Line: The important thing was not to regard bamboo merely as a material or to focus on its form. We studied the bamboo forest—the plural of bamboo—as a spatial whole, discovering its character as an aggregate field. For a long time afterwards, I regarded it as an archetypal space. Your term “entropic body” is a concise, accurate description: it is a spatial body whose condition changes indeterminately, from transparent to dense as it grows, and into different perceptual states through its sensitivity to climate.

Its distribution of density produces a self-similar relationship between subset and whole. We therefore treated the entrance pavilions as a subset of the forest, merging with it like water with water. Only through deliberate coloured illumination and a bridge floating through like a cloud is the pavilion awakened from this similarity. Its medium-to-high-density field of lines amplifies light and inserted elements, enabling the group to emerge as something distinctive.

There is consequently no conventional boundary. Its edge remains actively permeable, its form ambiguous and indeterminate. As for the paths, a Chinese saying holds that paths are made by people walking. We wanted the forest paths to appear in just this way, arising naturally from the ground. They are already part of the environment and therefore have no separate edge.

Baums Lab:

BAUMS Lab: This seems less like camouflage than architecture that enters its surroundings rapidly and naturally, acquiring a timeless condition. In an earlier conversation, you said you wanted natural weathering to become another project element—as though the artificial stone path might one day truly become natural stone. What will Bamboo Forest be like in a hundred years? Will it remain contemporary?

West-Line: My interest in weathering reflects a persistent question: can time be designed? It arose from working with natural stone. Certain stones have a particular life. Danxia stone from Chishui, for instance, is sandstone with high porosity and strong moisture absorption. Its damp, shaded face grows abundant moss over time, changing from red to black tinged with red after roughly five to ten years. Sunlit faces remain blood-red and sometimes give off vapour. Foguangyan Visitor Station, at the entrance to a core Danxia World Heritage landscape, is clad throughout in this stone. In damp winters and springs, moss grows on parts of the roof, veiling the surface in a translucent grey-brown film. In bright summer, the film on sun-facing slopes cracks and flakes away, revealing the glowing stone as if emerging from a cocoon.

The Chishui Danxia Exhibition Centre, then under construction, also uses this material extensively, but with further development. Variations in mineral composition between quarries produce differences in weather resistance and colour, so we select different stones for different parts of the building. Wall stones are sometimes deliberately soaked in water-repellent treatment to retain their freshly cut red colour, while the roof uses highly porous stone, ideally encouraging extensive moss growth.

At Huangpidong Martyrs’ Memorial, we also began exploring the weathered textures of artificial materials. By controlling the ingredients of site-mixed concrete and adjusting construction priorities, we deliberately produced high porosity and retained surface marks. These hold water in rain and create countless small, dense shadows in sunshine, giving a sense of time’s passage. At Bamboo Forest, Danxia-stone paths glow red in direct sun but become damp and dark beneath the bamboo. The path ages between these opposing states. Let time answer what it will become. As for contemporaneity, I have always understood it as the projection of thought within the conditions of a particular time and place.

Baums Lab:

BAUMS Lab: From a Western perspective, this idea of time is particularly interesting. Rather than existing in eternal stillness, architecture becomes a sensitive means of experiencing time, changing with the years and thereby acquiring vitality. We recognise an affinity with time in Chinese philosophy and poetry. How does this philosophical and literary background affect your architecture? Is it romantic feeling, or the influence of Guizhou’s natural environment?

West-Line: Poetry has influenced our generation to some degree. We respond both to classical Chinese verse and to modern poets such as Dai Wangshu and Bei Dao. Poetry makes us aware that people and things can communicate spiritually. Chinese poetry has long used elaboration, parallelism and sequences of phrases to evoke particular atmospheres and associative scenes. Through analogy, it establishes relationships between subjects and objects, expressing aspirations through things and responding to their forms and colours to create a spiritual pleasure. This mechanism fundamentally seeks an emotional point of contact between people and things.

The inexplicable homesickness common in Chinese poetry is typical. Dai Wangshu’s long, lonely rainy lane and his girl burdened with lilac-like sorrow convey the misty nostalgia of southern China. To the poet, the lane and lilac are living things. One senses that poetry’s nature is homecoming, and spiritual resonance its highest state. This mechanism gives time a material and emotional character: time is understood as subjective experience inseparable from human feeling and the condition of living beings. Chen Zi’ang’s lament—seeing neither the ancients before him nor those to come, contemplating the immensity of heaven and earth and weeping alone—and Bei Dao’s image of the sleeper, the storm, an ageing embrace and the rose of time both testify to this. Such experienced time leads us to consider “designing time”.

Baums Lab:

BAUMS Lab: You have spoken of architecture that “permeates nature”. I vividly remember photographing trees through the coloured glass of the Chishui Exhibition Hall. The building seemed deeply interwoven with the landscape. Could we call this a particular kind of filter, focused on the viewpoint of the person inside and establishing a new relationship between user and surroundings? Is the building not only responding to the existing environment but also remaking the landscape?

West-Line: The exhibition hall is governed by two systems with different characters. One is the inward-facing exhibition programme; the other is an outward-facing, porous system of sky wells that deliberately retains old trees, plants and climatic conditions on the site. The sky wells also organise the building. Carefully positioned voids divide the programme into exhibition spaces of varying sizes, each surrounded by courtyards. Their interfaces consist of dense lines alternating solid and void. Neither fully transparent like an all-glass façade nor isolating like a closed wall, they establish a particular permeability between bright courtyards and dark interiors. Nature is carried inside along light’s path from brightness to darkness. Alternating vertical glazing and walls preserve the independence of the exhibition rooms while allowing scenery and sunlight to enter. Trees retained in the courtyards work with those outside to break the building into multidirectional, dispersed views, turning the whole into lines and filtering the landscape throughout the interior. This is horizontal permeation.

A series of rooflights in the tiled roof brings the wooded slope behind and the tall courtyard trees into the interior. The rooflights use mainly red and yellow glass, whose strong penetrating effect under direct sunlight makes the scenery seem to enter forcefully. Coloured glazing also filters ordinary views into fragments resembling memory. The building thus establishes a particular relationship with its surroundings through permeation. It does not dissolve completely into nature, but enters an ongoing, dynamic process of integration and counterbalance.

Baums Lab:

BAUMS Lab: You have said that Bamboo Forest’s dense organisation activates the inner order of chaos and the forest’s entropy. At Foguangyan, as at the Danxia Exhibition Centre under construction, fragmentary geometrical units of the surface evoke geological conditions rather than a single natural form. Are you analysing nature’s essential relationships to construct artificial geometrical space? How does this conceptual method become a design process, and what is critical in turning an initial idea into a final form?

West-Line: In these projects, we deliberately dissect “nature” as a mode of spatial existence. We analyse its basic geometrical generation, spatial organisation, clustering, environmental relationships, the effects of geographical form on bodily behaviour, and the mechanisms that generate atmosphere. This reveals its central spatial structure, which we then adjust and transform into a control mechanism for producing new space.

Take Mengxi Bitan in Huaxi, Guiyang. A comprehensive analysis of mountain space revealed how terrain produces repeated intersections and combinations of bodily fragments: going up and down, moving and stopping, turning left and right, looking ahead and behind. We transformed this organisation into a three-dimensional circulation loop, inserting courtyards at intervals to modulate bodily relationships and adding branches within them. The resulting wandering system drifts up and down and becomes the project’s spatial control mechanism. The process advances through three stages: discovering the essential vernacular structure; establishing spatial control; and breaking formal and spatial relationships into standardised construction controls based on technical regulations. The decisive step is whether the original structure can be developed effectively into a mechanism for producing new space.

Baums Lab:

BAUMS Lab: Let us turn to light: the dramatic coloured light wells at the Red Army memorial, and the fresh, playful light at Foguangyan Visitor Station. Is light a constituent element in your work, or a result of combining other elements?

West-Line: Both projects use the same principle. Light is the most important agent in producing atmosphere. We explore a mechanism for composing an imaginative world through light: specially filtered daylight supplies the driving force, while an enclosing space made from a single, pure material system acts as its vessel, producing an atmosphere that carries educational meaning or awakens emotion and imagination.

At the Bingan Wharf Memorial Hall, light acts upon the spirit. Two roof sources, one red and one yellow, pour directly downwards, staining the vertical timbers with dispersed coloured rays. The dense slats amplify the light and draw attention strongly upwards, creating an atmosphere of distance, brightness and hope. An otherwise sombre interior becomes vivid and stirring; this baptism of light invites spiritual elevation. At Foguangyan, we deliberately insert red, yellow and clear skylights. Glazing in the corresponding façade zones matches their colours, turning planar light sources into volumes of light. Their powerful density works with the surrounding Danxia-stone piers to transform rough concrete and water courtyards into magnificent poetic scenes.

BAUMS Lab: “Up to Mountains & Down to Villages” originally focused on rural society, yet China is urbanising at an astonishing pace. Returning attention to the vernacular may be a position in itself, but how should these projects be understood within China’s accelerated development?

West-Line: The word “vernacular” often brings three different scenes to mind.

一种是我在贵州山寨间触景生情般的身体感官性敏感,这是形而下真实身体乡土;

One is the bodily sensitivity I experience among Guizhou’s mountain villages, where surroundings awaken feeling: a real, physical vernacular.

Another is the world of flashing phrases in Han Shaogong’s A Dictionary of Maqiao—“Maqiao bow”, “Zhuya soil”, “rural air”, “the third day of the third month”, “wandering souls”, “gardenia and jasmine”. Their earthy, uncanny, emotional and seasonal fragments interweave like a kaleidoscope, awakening reconstruction and imagination in the reader and producing countless versions of the vernacular in the mind. This is a metaphysical vernacular of thought.

A third lies in the Italian film Malèna: the beautiful, melancholy woman’s alluring body; the curious, innocent eyes of a boy on a bicycle; the indifferent crowd; weathered ochre Baroque buildings; repeated barren hills and the boundless sea. Through the camera, the director creates a dynamic sense of place as people and things come together and separate. Its gripping sensory control draws viewers into the scene while quietly conveying a view of the vernacular. This lies between the physical and metaphysical, harbouring contests, balances and exchanges among technology, media and locality. It became a point of departure for our study of vernacular consciousness in modern society.

In truth, facing the vernacular directly can make it harder to recognise. I prefer to understand it through encounters between differences. This leads to the continuing contest, since the beginning of modern history, between rural society and a society organised around production and consumption. Many now argue that advances in general technology have destroyed the vernacular. I believe technology is only a means: its purpose differs between these social systems, so its manifestations differ. Traditional Chinese cities were themselves vernacular complexes, growing largely from the expansion and transformation of villages.

In From the Soil, published in 1947, Fei Xiaotong proposed the famous “differential mode of association” to describe traditional Chinese social structures and interpersonal relationships. Imagine a stone falling into water and producing countless, differentiated ripples. This is an ethical conception. The lun in renlun—human relations—is likened to those ripples. We therefore understand vernacular society as a concentric structure of relationships. Lévi-Strauss also offered a clear account of this concentric-circle question in his anthropological studies.

Modern society, by contrast, evolved from a structure based on clearly separated functions towards one centred on production and consumption. This differs fundamentally from a society of human relations. Technological development is therefore not itself wrong; the key is how we direct its purposes. Understanding the vernacular in this way makes our hands-on research a natural undertaking.

West-Line has consistently studied the differences between rural and urban structures, providing broad directional coordinates for practice. When studying human environments—cities and settlements—people repeatedly return to the vernacular as an origin. Why? As Heidegger suggests, increasing specialisation brings a forgetting of Being: people become less aware of their roots. This raises an intriguing question: where, then, is Being?

Perhaps Heidegger’s account points to the search for the roots of existence through a return to the vernacular. Technology, in contrast, derives its advantage from progress and efficiency. The vernacular and technology are thus two forces, both necessary for rural society’s healthy development. When people feel spiritually helpless, they seek the vernacular, whether physical, metaphysical or between the two. Yet the vernacular also needs transformation. As basic living conditions change, people rely on cities to nourish rural life. In China’s present circumstances, the New Socialist Countryside programme is a top-down example of this urban support. West-Line’s exploration of “vernacular + general technology” may offer a new version of rural existence that retains its basic relational structure while embracing contemporary life.

Baums Lab:

BAUMS Lab: Thousands migrate to large cities. Some villages you took us to contained only older people and children; all the young adults had left for work. How can rural development proceed while protecting its fragile essence? Is the vernacular world condemned to die, or can it choose a sustainable path in harmony with nature?

West-Line: In the opening to his captivating book Invisible Cities, the Italian writer Italo Calvino writes:

“Perhaps we are approaching a critical moment in urban life, and Invisible Cities is a dream that grows from the heart of unliveable cities. Today, people speak with equal concern of the destruction of the natural environment and the fragility of vast technological systems, whose vulnerability may trigger chain failures and paralyse the whole. […] My Marco Polo seeks the hidden reasons that enable people to live in cities, reasons capable of outlasting these crises. Cities are a whole made of many things: memories, desires and signs of a language. […] My book opens and closes with images of happy cities, continually forming and disappearing within unhappy cities.”

Calvino’s extraordinary urban fragments seem to conceal explorations of possibilities involving consumption, sensory seduction, the desire to dream, relationships with natural systems and pop phenomena—possibilities tied to human society’s survival and development. They flash with proposed versions of human existence. His perceptive allegories reveal possible worlds behind everyday reality, making possibility an essential dimension for understanding human life and an epistemological basis for seeking a way forward. Possibility acts through its very absence, asking us to pause at a fork in the road and appreciate the richness and multiplicity of existence. Invisible Cities is, in short, an allegory of thinking about human Being.

In a world where external determination is so destructive that inner motives and bodily desires become negligible, testing possibilities means seeking ways to keep illuminating the human lifeworld. A vision of sustainable development is an ultimate proposition about preserving these precious possibilities. Capital and power continually seek to control technological progress and efficiency to express profit and authority. In pursuing these ends, the individual is forgotten. Human nature, however, seeks to protect the lifeworld. Human nature and technology must therefore counterbalance one another for society to develop harmoniously. What is human nature? Calvino answers through allegory: the places where public life occurs and exchanges take place; sensory vessels where surroundings revive the body; places where dreams may become real; the natural world in which our bodies belong to the mountains; and sudden, unbidden flashes of insight. Human nature is, briefly, the growth of possibility.

Sustainable development, encompassing the coordinated development of economy, society, resources and environmental protection, is the most extensive contemporary proposition of possibility. It concerns the conditions of human existence and carries an ultimate, almost utopian meaning. Its breadth gives it an encyclopaedic structure, requiring selective reading and judgement; its utopian aspiration requires the support of a continually advancing, systematic view of technology. “Possibility” plus “a view of technology” thus becomes a working framework that accords with sustainability’s ultimate proposition and with human nature, while making full use of technical systems built by capital and power.

The regeneration of vernacular complexes is one possible version of human existence developed within this framework. It meets local people’s dual needs for traditional spirit and contemporary life, potentially encouraging those who have left to return. This exploration is particularly meaningful in western China, where natural conditions, dense traditional settlements and rich contemporary influences interweave. Regenerating and growing the vernacular is a form of respect for human civilisation and protection of human nature. The vernacular must not die.

Baums Lab:

BAUMS Lab: Since the late eighteenth century, the Western world has pursued development through maximal extraction of natural resources. China now faces an unprecedented development trajectory, and a positive ecological approach may be central to its sustainable future. How does “Up to Mountains & Down to Villages” seek to build that green future?

West-Line: Traditional rural construction in western China is a complete system of mountain-and-wilderness poetics. At its core are human relations (social structure), wildness (the unorthodox), poetics (feeling awakened by surroundings), and relationships between mountains and water. Hierarchical nesting supplies the framework for spatial growth; attention to the body gives a mature, emotional understanding of people and nature. Our series seeks to develop these essential spatial structures, link them with generally applicable technical systems and regenerate this version of existence in a contemporary setting.

Project characteristics and mechanisms of spatial production

1 Focus: a branching, three-dimensional circulation system.

2 Analysis of essential structure: the complexity of the geographical setting is projected onto the physical body as repeated intersections and combinations of fragmented actions—up and down, moving and stopping, left and right, looking ahead and behind, and judging the route forward.

3 Generating the spatial control mechanism: deliberately establish a three-dimensional circulation loop, insert courtyards intermittently to modulate bodily states, and add junctions within them, transforming the loop into a wandering system with multiple directional choices.

(1) A mountain frame-grid creates an ordered background on the hillside. Branching paths penetrate this grid and control the whole.

(2) A fragmented, sensitive, nerve-like internal structure continuously stimulates the branching paths. It overlays a branching movement system (imposed), fragmented sky wells (contingent) and rooms within the frame (functional). Its structure is one of “winding around and around”, making a simple question complex.

(3) Branching increases path complexity and gives movement within the dwelling a central role. Spatial experience becomes a dynamic process unfolding in time, departing from conventional static experience.

(4) Loops are an important spatial feature of Zhuxi Residence. Plans often contain two or more stairs, forming loops in section as well as plan. Their interweaving creates a three-dimensional circulation system. Stairs are not isolated devices for moving vertically; they turn two-dimensional routes into three-dimensional ones, bringing traditional external mountain paths into the interior.

(5) Spatial organisation is “tight outside, loose inside”. “Tight outside” refers to the dense interlocking relationships of the site plan; “loose inside” describes the inward-looking landscapes formed by varied sky wells within this closely packed arrangement. These sky wells create a porous spatial system able to accommodate the finer details of everyday life. The residential spaces around them are distinctly inward-looking. Although modern in form, the sky wells retain a traditional sensibility, while the spaces organised around them invite self-reflection. A sky well within a sky well equals life plus memory: the inner sky well holds memory, while the outer one faces everyday life. In typological terms, the sky wells of Zhuxi Residence subdivide communal space a second time.

4 Standardised control: a reinforced-concrete grid meets the hillside at points, in a manner comparable to timber framing. This accords with familiar ways of thinking among mountain communities and facilitates design, construction and acceptance under current standards.

Project characteristics and mechanisms of spatial production

1 Focus: hierarchical nesting and feeling awakened by surroundings.

2 Analysis of essential structure: bodies, wandering souls on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, the Flower Miao, the legend of Jiulong, musty smells, red, yellow and blue flowers, five sisters, kinship and old trees—real or imagined phenomena of life, thought and perception—are understood as relationships among things in a broad and equal sense. All exist as “bodies”, in sunlight or imagination. From them arise techniques for directing the body and generative patterns governed by legend and kinship, with hierarchical relationships organised through the differential mode of association.

3 Generating the spatial control mechanism: establish two orders. The first governs layout: a hierarchically nested structure expanding through self-similarity from stone body to group to cluster. The second governs the participant’s perception: building through the body. Together they explore how general construction technologies can coexist with the immeasurable atmosphere central to vernacular building, developing spatial techniques that awaken bodily perception.

4 Standardised control: frame and brick-concrete structures provide efficient general construction. Walls use a conventional substrate-and-facing assembly. Locally made cement-sand bricks form the substrate, with thin, inexpensive, abundant layered blue-grey stone slabs as facing. Their surface expressions change markedly with the weather. The porous cement bricks provide load-bearing capacity and insulation but are vulnerable to moisture; the stone strips resist damp and penetration while producing atmosphere and an emotionally expressive texture.

A dense mechanism of repeated isomorphism — Bamboo Forest Gateway

Location: beside the Chi–Tong road, Chishui, Guizhou. Programme: entrance and resting spaces. Setting: an ecological tourism destination. Floor area: 513.5 m². Landscape area: 6,125 m². Structure: mixed construction. Completed: September 2008.

Project characteristics and mechanisms of spatial generation

1 Focus: mechanisms of activation.

2 Analysis of essential structure: the bamboo forest contains an extreme mechanism of dense, repeated isomorphism. Supported by this density, sunlight, wind, rain, mist and other climatic factors are amplified into powerful forces acting upon the spatial body.

3(1) “Concealment” is the environmental strategy: merge into the forest through a dense, self-similar, repeated spatial condition.

3(2) “Awakening” is the core task. Winding paths deliberately activate bodily sensitivity; reflections on water regulate climatic effects; roofs and coloured glass produce the forest’s multicoloured light; and the dense organisation amplifies light, wind, rain and mist. Together these awaken bamboo’s vitality and revive bodily perception. In short, “concealment” constructs the space’s basic condition, while “awakening” activates it.

4 Standardised control: hollow concrete forms provide support; suspension assembles bamboo into a dense spatial field; and steaming improves its weather resistance.

Embedded in the past — Bingan Wharf Memorial Hall

Location: Bing’an Town, Chishui, Guizhou.

Background: Bing’an Old Town is designated a classic destination for Red tourism, a historic and cultural town of Guizhou, and a historic and cultural village of China. It is a characteristic old market town on the southern Sichuan–northern Guizhou border, on the historic Sichuan–Guizhou route, 12 kilometres from central Chishui. The Chishui River borders it on three sides. Along the river, striking stilt houses stand on hundreds of round timber posts anchored to ochre-coloured rock. Its single narrow stone-paved street has long served as a market for the surrounding villages.

Project characteristics and mechanisms of spatial production

1 Focus: mechanisms for composing an evocative illusion of light.

2 Analysis of essential structure: “Red tourism” can be understood as travel centred on memories of major historical events. Its mechanism is to awaken revolutionary memories and give expression to contemporary responses: producing meaning activates space and thereby supports the local economy and tourism.

3 Generating the spatial control mechanism. (1) Embeddedness: “The memorial squeezes into a cluster of old houses, just as the old house once nestled among the local community.”

(2) Dense-strip space: parallel strips and the extensive permeability of their gaps make a small exhibition space feel expansive, giving the interior a complex purity. The dense timber strips also symbolise the circumstances of the revolution: thorns are everywhere, yet cannot conceal the distant promise of hope. Spatial composition thus fulfils the exhibition space’s inherent role in educating and moving the visitor.

(3) Composing an evocative illusion of light: frosted white glass at the principal side-light sources abstracts the outside scenery and diffuses the interior illumination, creating graduated effects of light and volume. Roof light pours directly downwards. Together these forms of lighting draw attention upwards, towards distant light and hope. Two coloured rooflights, one red and one yellow, use the interaction of light and colour to give parts of the interior an intense hue, making the atmosphere vivid and stirring.

(4) Roof characteristics: the upturned edges of the central flying V-shaped roof form clerestories, while its lower valley serves as a galvanised-sheet-metal gutter. Its slopes, colours, materials and construction methods resemble those of neighbouring old houses, maintaining harmony with the setting. Yet the lowered ridge and raised eaves invert the spatial logic of a traditional roof. This expresses a professional position distinct from historic architecture: even in appearance, a contemporary building should not be indistinguishable from an old one. Difference from history arises from respect for history.

4 Standardised control. (1) Structure: a timber system, with pine for load-bearing members and fir for other components; timber recovered from the original unsafe house was treated and reused for the interior lattice. (2) Foundations: concrete piles.

(3) Envelope: external walls have 12 mm timber boards on each side of a 30 mm insulation layer, with the outer boards salvaged from the original house. The roof adds insulation above traditional timber boarding, followed by counter-battens and small grey tiles. The envelope receives a transparent fire-retardant coating. (4) Connections: mortise-and-tenon joints, adhesive bonding and nailed joints.

(5) Grafting contemporary technical thinking onto traditional construction: traditional timber construction is used throughout. Local mortise-and-tenon methods are retained while geometric relationships at intersections are made explicit. Sandwich panels, transparent fire-retardant varnish and waterproofing layers meet the standardised requirements for thermal insulation, energy efficiency, fire protection and resistance to water.

Overall view of the memorial

Project characteristics and mechanisms of spatial production

1 Focus: producing atmosphere through materials.

2 Analysis of essential structure: atmosphere consists of a perceptible state, an amorphous enveloping presence and solid enclosures. It is a field in which bodily perception interacts with the material substance of the world, moving between the measurable and the immeasurable.

3 Generating the spatial control mechanism. (1) Establish three enclosures with different material characters: first, a long trench-like volume with a U-shaped section. Its walls are rough, site-mixed exposed concrete, riddled with holes that reveal material depth, cast innumerable shadows in sunlight and hold droplets in rain. The floor is smooth red cement, dusty in dry weather and streaming blood-red when wet. Second, a partly enclosed, sunken cylindrical space with an all-encompassing red floor. Third, a square-spiral memorial rising from the site’s centre of gravity, as if a battle flag’s cry had solidified. The cast-concrete cavity is finished with smooth cement inside, creating numerous bright reflective spots.

(2) The three enclosures follow a particular centripetal order, forming an open, quiet composition for contemplation.

4 Standardised control: the walls and geometric forms are cast-in-place concrete, using rough timber formwork measuring 2.4 × 1.2 m. Formwork joints were not emphasised, given the cost and the builders’ unfamiliarity with the technique. Stripping damaged some joints, leaving scars and pull marks in the concrete: differing degrees of accidental imperfection were deliberately accepted. The ground is paved with specially made concrete blocks containing local Chishui sand and aggregate mixed with iron-oxide red pigment. Measuring 240 × 120 × 60 mm, the units are inexpensive and convenient to transport and lay in mountainous terrain.

Project characteristics and mechanisms of spatial production

1 Analysis of essential structure: the educational mechanism of the traditional sky well. Carefully anticipated scenes that awaken feeling, exemplary objects, emotional variations and the architectural language of the surrounding elevations combine to produce a hierarchical, inward-facing exemplary space inviting contemplation. Meaning arises without words, subtly shaping thought.

2 Generating the spatial control mechanism. (1) The commemorative space is defined through “lowering” and “lofty distance”. (2) Material space is produced through a deliberately low-key approach.

(3) An educational mechanism of subtle transformation is created by deliberately introducing a porous system of exemplary sky wells into the exhibition hall. Three types—ritual, poetic and sublime—form a sequenced network that modulates atmosphere. This brings spiritual pleasure and allows the commemorative space’s educational purpose to work almost imperceptibly.

3 Standardised control: walls are painted white throughout and floors covered with vivid red Danxia stone. Material expression is reduced as far as possible, transforming space into an almost abstract condition of extreme colour. Brick-and-concrete construction uses readily available materials and inexpensive labour to minimise cost. Junction details are simplified to reduce their material prominence.

Project characteristics and mechanisms of spatial production

1 Focus: responding in different directions and integrating those responses.

2(1) Analysis of essential structure: the site’s spatial archetype is a funnel, broad at the top and narrow at the bottom. A visitor route passes through it, disrupting its inward focus and creating a linear, dynamic space experienced over time.

2(2) Three orders are implicit: the main visitor route focusing diagonally east–west on the cave entrance; the upward viewing order from the bottom; and views from the base towards the stream. The “base” is the key to the entrance design, unifying responses in different directions.

3 Generating the spatial control mechanism: the junctions between the “base” and its surrounding interfaces produce three distinct scenes.

(1) Flow: influenced by the stream’s movement, the viewing corridor north of the base takes on a flowing character. The liquid-like roof, directional walls and variable point contacts between columns and ground reinforce this movement.

(2) Undulation, well openings and rain: to ease the tense relationship with the cliff to the south, a transitional spatial body is inserted. Influenced by the cliff, it becomes a group of stone houses. The roof is an undulating surface: upward-projecting stone piers stretch the base into a folded, tensioned plane. Its dense organisational mechanism pairs the functional system with light openings and the courtyard system with three-dimensional rainwater routes.

(3) Focus and convergence: as sightlines contract sharply on either side, the cave entrance becomes a visual focal point, governing the base’s principal landscape order.

4 Standardised control. (1) The “base” is a vast red folded surface of parallel layers, paved with Danxia stone blocks measuring 300 × 600 × 150 mm. It produces a quiet, almost sacred sense of openness.

(2) The undulating surfaces are cast in concrete containing Danxia sandstone aggregate and iron-oxide red pigment. Formwork uses fir boards of varying ages, measuring 300 × 600 × 20 mm. To accommodate waterproofing layers, the upper roof surfaces are faced with 300 × 600 × 12 mm Danxia stone sheets; their scale and laying pattern continue those of the base. Roof soffits, sides and drainage channels retain the mottled exposed-concrete finish left after stripping—rough, direct and forceful like stone.

(3) The main spaces are enclosed by stone-pier groups at regular or irregular intervals, with sections of 370 × 370 mm, 370 × 870 mm, and L-shaped sections with dimensions of 555/990 mm. Seven stone-box volumes are enclosed by pier groups built from 240 × 120 × 60 mm Danxia stone blocks. This approach derives from conceiving the whole as a stone house, while evoking the structural archetype of brick-and-concrete construction and expressing the sandstone’s capacity to be cut into thin pieces.

RURAL AREAS WORKING MODEL

Working “up” and “down” reflects a partial withdrawal from mainstream society: from a commercial society centred on production and consumption towards a vernacular society centred on human relationships. This compelled partial retreat means that our working model must combine two forces, the vernacular and general technology. It leads to West-Line’s guiding direction: “general construction through vernacular systems + the production of spatial control mechanisms”.
